Purpose and scope of the role
The Acoustic Logging Technician will deploy, collect and process acoustic logging equipment across the Wessex Water distribution network to generate actionable leak points for field crews. This permanent, full‑time role (40 hours per week) supports leakage detection on contracts covering the Yeovil area and surrounding zones; deployments are typically left in situ overnight and retrieved the following morning. You will analyse district metered areas (DMAs) and control zones, identify suitable assets for logger placement, interpret plans and schematics, complete survey and time records, and liaise with leakage technicians and the contract management team.
The role pays the Real Living Wage, offers overtime and a comprehensive benefits package, and sits within a small, specialist field team delivering multi‑site leakage programmes for a major water client.
Your impact in this position
In the short term you will be competent in logger deployment, recovery and basic analysis, immediately contributing to reduced unreported losses. Over six to twelve months you will broaden network understanding and route optimisation skills, enabling higher daily coverage and more precise leak referrals. Longer term there are clear progression opportunities into senior field technician, leakage analyst or supervisory roles across Tetra Tech’s water operations, supported by formal training and one‑to‑one mentorship while working on significant, revenue‑generating leakage programmes.
Core Capabilities Required For Success
* Confident handling, installation and recovery of acoustic loggers, routine equipment checks and basic fault diagnosis; meticulous completion of survey forms and asset records.
* Ability to read and interpret plans, schematics and DMA/control zone data to select optimal logger locations and translate findings into points of interest for investigation.
* Strong safety focus, competent in manual handling (including lifting inspection covers) and working safely in all weather and low‑light conditions; adherence to company H&S procedures.
* Clear written and verbal communication to record findings, update teams and provide excellent client‑facing service; accurate timesheet and paperwork management.
* Efficient daily planning across the Yeovil region to maximise overnight deployments and minimise travel; ability to work independently and meet daily targets.
Qualifications And Training
Expected: Full UK driving licence; basic numeracy and literacy; willingness to work outdoors and overnight when required. Full on‑the‑job training and mentorship provided.
Desirable: Prior experience in the water industry or acoustic logging, NVQ or equivalent in utilities/field services, CSCS card or relevant safety qualifications.
