Overview

As a valued member of the Ophthalmology Team, the post holder will be involved in a wide range of sub specialisms including outpatient activity, emergency duties, theatre work and ward rounds.


Responsibilities

* Outpatient Activity – Undertaking general, specialist and cataract clinics.
* EERS/Emergency Duties (Eye Emergency Referral Service) – Providing referral triage, emergency and urgent diagnosis and treatment. Liaison with senior medical staff (registrars, non-consultant career grade doctors or consultants) regarding cases requiring admission or general anaesthesia. Assist senior medical staff with emergency surgery. Provide cover for colleagues on leave as indicated in the duty rota. May be required to attend other hospitals to see patients on an emergency basis. Perform duties during emergencies and in unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, with consultation where practicable with colleagues both senior and junior. Note: Exceptional additional commitments under this subsection are agreed as part of the Secretary of State’s framework.
* Theatre Activity – Provide support in theatres and undertake independent theatre sessions in line with abilities.
* Ward Rounds – Attend ward rounds and examine pre- and postoperative patients. Ward duties to cover leave and provide continuity of care.
