JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal


Overview

The post holder is responsible for carrying out professional duties as a teacher within the school in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment and the Board’s policies.


Responsibilities

1. Planning
o Planning and preparing courses and lessons
o Teaching according to the educational needs of the pupils assigned, including setting and marking work
o Assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment of pupils
2. General
o Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and groups assigned
o Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, future education and careers
o Making records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs
o Communicating and consulting with parents
o Co-operating with persons or bodies outside the school as approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors
o Participating in meetings for these purposes
3. Assessment/Reporting
o Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils
4. Staff Development/Professional Development
o Participating in staff development and performance review when required
o Reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work
o Participating in arrangements for further training and professional development
o Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum development, teaching materials, programmes, assessment and pastoral arrangements
5. Discipline/Health and Safety
o Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety
o Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements
6. Public Examinations
o Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing pupils
o Recording and reporting assessments and supervising during examinations
7. Management/Administration
o Contributing to selection and professional development of other teachers
o Co-ordinating or managing the work of other teachers
o Participating in curriculum, organisation and pastoral development and management
o Participating in administrative tasks including supervision of support staff and allocation of equipment
o Attending assemblies and registering attendance as required
8. Number of days/Hours of work
o 195 days per year, with up to 190 teaching days
o 1,265 hours per year, excluding time spent preparing and marking outside school premises
o Weekly teaching hours framework with allowances for planning and other duties
o Breaks: at least 30 minutes between 12 noon and 2:00 pm (or 2:30 pm in nursery settings)
9. Staff cover
o Supervising and teaching pupils when a teacher is unavailable, within defined conditions
10. Review and Development
o This job description is a guideline and may be revised; other duties of a similar nature may be assigned
11. Equality

Section 1 — Essential Criteria

Section 1 lists essential criteria for qualifications, experience, knowledge and other requirements to be demonstrated on the application form.

* Qualifications/ Professional Membership
o Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland by the closing date
* Experience
o Demonstrable experience of teaching Key Stage 1 and/or Key Stage 2 to achieve positive learning outcomes
o Two years of paid primary teaching experience
o Experience leading a core curriculum area (e.g., Literacy, UICT, Numeracy)
* Knowledge
o Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum
o Knowledge of pastoral care, including promoting positive behaviour and nurturing approaches
o Experience teaching children with Special Educational Needs
o Knowledge of digital classroom tools and use of tablets/mobile technologies to enhance teaching and learning
* Other
o Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI)


Section 2 — Essential Criteria (Interview/Selection)

The following criteria will be measured during the interview/selection stage.

* Knowledge
o Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching
o Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection policy/practice
* Skills / Abilities
o Effective teaching and classroom management to inspire and challenge pupils
o Ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment
o Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the community
o Ability to work as an effective team member and to motivate self and others
* Values Orientation / School Ethos
o Evidence of how your experience reflects the school’s values; school information at the provided site


Section 3 — Desirable Criteria

Desirable criteria may be used to determine a manageable pool of candidates and will be applied as described.

* Qualifications and Experience
o Experience monitoring pupil progress, setting targets and interventions
o Experience teaching with phonic-based approaches
o Experience leading Literacy initiatives
o Experience using social media to promote community engagement

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines regulated activity. If appointed to a post involving regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure will be required, and the applicant will meet the cost.
