Job Overview
Highly Specialist Orthoptist / Lead Orthoptist position in the Orthoptic Department of Ysbyty Gwynedd. Responsible for advanced clinical assessment, management and leadership within the orthoptic service.
Main Duties
* Maintain effective and efficient Orthoptic Services.
* Support the Clinical Service Manager in service and workforce planning, development, and expansion.
* Maintain a high level of clinical governance within the department.
* Act as Team Leader of the Orthoptist team.
* Assessment and diagnosis of a broad, highly specialised/advanced complex caseload, including paediatric, adult, disabled and visually impaired patients.
* Provide specialist advice and expertise to patients, colleagues, carers, students and professionals in Ophthalmology, Paediatrics and Maxillo‑Facial disciplines.
* Participate in specialised clinics such as the children’s refraction service, stroke, visual processing disorders and special schools/units.
* Assist in clinical teaching of Orthoptics to undergraduates and other health professionals (Optometrists, Health Visitors, School Nurses, General Practitioners, junior doctors and medical students).
* Provide specific areas of clinical expertise and services beyond core orthoptic duties.
Qualifications and Knowledge
* Essential
o Degree in Orthoptics or Diploma of the British Orthoptic Council.
o Registration with the Health Care Professions Council.
o Teaching qualification.
o Management qualification.
o Evidence of working at a Masters level.
* Desirable
o Management qualification.
o Experience of a lead or managerial role.
o Ability to speak Welsh.

o Advanced knowledge of clinical Orthoptics and related areas.

* Essential
o Demonstrated effective leadership and management skills.
o Tact and diplomacy when working with others.
o Experience in presenting to groups; strong communication, organisational and time‑management skills.

o Ability to speak Welsh.
