Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the acute oncology team and Brighton and PRH for an advanced practitioner role 50% alongside a matron role 50% managing the acute oncology team. The clinical role will be supporting patients with toxicities of treatment at Royal Sussex County Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital and working with medical colleagues to avoid patient admissions. There will be close working with the ACP/matron role in Worthing and SRH and some cross cover will be required.


Main duties of the job

To work within the acute oncology nursing team based in Princess Royal and Brighton but will work cross site within University Hospital Sussex.To be an expert practitioner, function as a resource and oversee the development of nursing services within acute oncology (AO), and Immunotherapy (IO). To work as an advanced nurse practitioner 50% of the time to help improve efficiency in the admission pathways by developing new pathways with the same day emergency care (SDEC) teams to reduce/prevent patients attending the emergency department. To develop ambulatory pathways for patients exhibiting toxicities on immunotherapy to prevent admission to hospital. Demonstrating in-depth knowledge and competence in all aspects of cancer and the wide range of treatments prescribed and their side effects that supports management of patients with cancer. The other aspect of the role will be to work as a matron 50% of the time supporting and line managing the UHsussex AO/IO teams and help strengthen education to multi-disciplinary staff in the management of patients with acute oncology and I.O. toxicities presentations to a range of health care professionals. You will work closely and cross cover with the AO/IO ACP in other hospitals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Support clinical decisions regarding care in AO/IO in the absence of precedents, and sometimes without resource to others following advanced assessment and interpretation of patient’s condition by your team.
* Explore and initiate innovative ways of collaborating with the multi-disciplinary team AO and IO MDT’s and carers to continuously improve the care of emergency cancer patients that attend hospitals.
* To support practice and in-business continuity work at an advanced, highly specialist level demonstrating in-depth knowledge and competence in all aspects of cancer and encompassing advanced assessment and clinical management skills that are evidence based
* Demonstrate high levels of interpersonal and specialist technical skills in managing teams and collaborating with other ACP’s when caring for patients with AO/IO needs.
* Discuss and reflect on complex case management
* To use highly developed and specialist knowledge to advise other staff on the investigations and treatment required by cancer patients during their emergency admission
* To use advanced communication skills in the management of AO/IO team to support the team to manage delivering complex information to patient/carers that facilitate their understanding to assist them in decision making processes
* Collaborate with nurses and AHP’s in general ward areas supporting their educational needs in developing their skills in caring for patients with acute oncology needs, particularly when communicating sensitive issues.
* Develop and establish clinically effective standards of specialist care, and initiates and develops protocols and guidelines that direct staff in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of effective specialist patient care across the hospital and in the community.
* To develop ambulatory pathways of care for emergency presentations by patients with cancer
* To work closely with both cancer centres to ensure rapid specialist review of patients with cancer
* To provide support, leadership and line management for the AO/IO CNS teams as required.


Person specification

* Registered Nurse
* Master’s in nursing including advanced clinical practice skill set.
* Experience in cancer nursing and SACT
* Cancer or Haematology Nursing Pathway or equivalent
* Teaching experience
* Evidence of quality improvement initiative
