Job summary

This role supports the provision of palliative care to children, young people and families living with a life limited condition. Palliative care includes the provision of respite breaks, enabling children opportunities to have fun, make memories adding life to shortened years. You will provide high quality, holistic, family centred and compassionate care whilst meeting the complex clinical needs of the children in our care. The hospice delivers end of life care to a small number of children, working with specialist teams providing training and advice to manage childrens symptoms effectively. You will work as part of a large team comprising of clinical staff, activities coordinators and the child and family support team.

Main duties of the job

Participate in the delivery of high-quality nursing care to children and young people who receive respite and end of life care at the hospice.

Provide clinical nursing assessment, robust care planning and evaluation of care.

Participate in the training and development opportunities and frameworks provided by the hospice education team.

Use clinical judgment to manage the deteriorating patient, following care plans, escalation of care and the use of patient safety tools.

Work within your scope of practice and clinical competence, asking for help from senior nurses when appropriate.

Advocate for the child and young person and their families, supporting and promoting decisions, choices and best interests.

Work as part of a team, providing support and supervision to students and junior members of staff.

Ensure the holistic care of children and young people, by liaising with and referring to the wider support teams within the hospice

Working with support, provide end of life care to children or young people staying at the hospice.

Provide assessment of children who are end of life ensuring symptoms are controlled, liaising with the specialist palliative care teams as required.

Ensure exemplary communication skills and participate in the MDT planning of childrens care.

Maintain accurate contemporaneous patients records as per hospice policy and NMC framework.
