We are seeking 3 dedicated and experienced Clinical Nurse Specialists in Ophthalmology to join our expanding team. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated nurse who is passionate about delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care within a specialist environment.
Job Summary
The Clinical Nurse Specialist will act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the multi‑professional team, patients and carers within the Ophthalmology Service. The role involves developing specialist practice, delivering services, improving care quality, and contributing to the service group’s objectives. Core responsibilities include clinical practice, leadership, patient advocacy, audit, and education.
Main Duties of the Job
* Lead nurse‑led ophthalmology clinics, providing advanced assessment, management, and support for patients with a wide range of eye conditions.
* Act as an expert resource for colleagues, offering specialist education to patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
* Develop and improve patient pathways, drive innovation, and maintain service excellence.
* Maintain professional registration and uphold high standards of practice in line with NMC requirements.
* Participate in professional development, including training, academic qualifications, and reflective practice.
* Adhere to all trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards, ensuring a high standard of personal and professional behaviour.

Job Responsibilities
* Practice autonomously with a high level of accountability at a specialist level in the direct delivery of high‑quality care, making critical clinical decisions based on advanced assessment skills.
* Manage a caseload of patients and nurse‑led review clinics with support from Consultants.
* Assess, diagnose and treat patients under consultant guidance, develop treatment plans, record findings and refer appropriately.
* Challenge practice to ensure the best and most appropriate treatment, maintaining high standards and responding proactively to changing patient needs.
* Collaborate in the establishment and monitoring of protocols and care pathways; participate in case discussions and multidisciplinary meetings.
* Undertake independent prescribing if required, in accordance with policy and legislation.
* Supervise and support junior staff and identify deteriorating patients, coordinating care with the multidisciplinary team.
* Ensure correct administration, storage and safe handling of medicines, including controlled, intravenous and cytotoxic drugs.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
* Registered Nurse
* Experience as Band 6 in an Ophthalmology NHS environment
* PG Cert: Clinical Ophthalmic Practice or equivalent
* Experience administering Intravitreal Injection Clinics
* Leadership course completion
Desirable Qualifications
* Leadership course
* MSc in Advanced Practice or working towards one
* Management qualification or experience
Essential Experience
* Triaging and working in eye emergency clinics
* Pre‑assessment clinics within ophthalmology
* Supervising and assessing in a clinical setting
* Experience working in nurse‑led clinics>
Desirable Experience
* Clinical audit and research
* Experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in a specialist service
