Locum Consultant in Public Health Medicine / Consultant in Public Health – Staff Bank Opportunity with NHS Orkney
NHS Orkney invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to join our Staff Bank as Locum Consultants in Public Health Medicine / Public Health. This opportunity is open to both medical and non-medical applicants who meet the criteria for consultant-level practice. Medical applicants will be paid as a Consultant and non-medical applicants will be paid as Agenda for Change Band 8d.
Successful candidates may be contacted periodically regarding their availability to undertake locum work, which may be on a full-time or part-time basis. This could include participation in Health Protection on-call arrangements, and other duties depending on service needs. Specific objectives and areas of responsibility will be agreed on a case-by-case basis.
These roles will provide senior leadership and expert public health advice across a range of functions within an island health board context. Areas of work may include:
* Health Protection (including on-call duties)
* Immunisation and Screening Programmes
* Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Services
* Development and quality assurance of Public Health reports, policies, and governance frameworks
* Public Health input to service improvement, strategy, and emergency planning
* Deputising for the Director of Public Health
* Other senior public health duties as required
Applicants should be able to demonstrate a broad portfolio of public health expertise across all domains and be able to work flexibly. Some assignments may be undertaken remotely, subject to agreement.

NHS Orkney is currently seeking a Locum Consultant in Public Health Medicine / Public Health to provide Consultant-level Health Protection cover on-site during the Island Games, which will take place from 10th to 18th July 2025. Further details of the event are available at www.orkney2025.com. This will involve office-hours and out-of-hours support. Remote senior Consultant support will also be in place.
Accommodation and travel support may be provided for this assignment.
