About O: O is a friendly and active individual who uses a wheelchair, though he can transfer in and out independently. He enjoys getting out into the community, particularly by car, so it is essential that his support worker has a driver's licence. Spending time outdoors is important to O, and he loves being in the garden as much as possible. He also attends hydrotherapy once a week, so his support worker must be comfortable in the water and able to swim. O is non-verbal and lives with autism, as well as hearing and vision impairments. He benefits greatly from support workers who have experience with non-verbal communication strategies and a good understanding of autism. Patience, consistency, and a person-centred approach are key. O requires full assistance with all personal care and daily living tasks. His support worker should be confident and experienced in providing this level of care and carry this out in a respectful way. Engaging O in meaningful and enjoyable activities is important for his well-being. He particularly enjoys sensory experiences and musical toys, which help him relax and stay engaged.
