Our Senior Java Engineers are skilled practitioners and role models for software craft within DWP. They lead and set the strategy, as well as build our products and applications alongside researchers, testers, architects, analysts and designers as part of multi-functional agile delivery teams.
You will be a leader in one or more of our Engineering teams, developing Engineers via coaching and mentoring whilst ensuring we follow best practice and standards. Guide our teams on how to deliver quality software and fostering collaborative team cultures that produce world class software solutions.
You will use your skills in software design principles, patterns and paradigms to produce software products used by millions of people.
Your experience of Java along with containerised microservices deployed into cloud environments will mean you can be effective immediately, with a solid understanding of our most common deployment patterns.

Your responsibilities will include but are not restricted to, the following:
* Acting as a senior engineer, leading on one or more product teams or services in collaboration with other teams or departments.
* Be accountable for the code you and your teams produce, ensuring operational stability, robustness, resilience, availability and quality.
* Ensuring that the members of your team are delivering to the best of their ability at all times, supporting the development of their own skills whilst evangelising best practices and standards in design and delivery across your teams, DWP and potentially wider government.
* Work across the entire technical stack, from architecture, design to CI/CD pipelines, databases, backend frameworks, APIs and user interfaces to ensure quality and consistency.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams including user researchers, product managers and senior stakeholders to quickly understand customer needs.
* Lead on the selection, adoption and establishment of frameworks, tools and processes to responsibly develop, deploy and monitor our products/services by utilising your strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
