The role sits within the Navigation Team of the Nautical and Navigation Policy branch, part of the UK Maritime Services (UKMS) directorate at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The MCA delivers the Government’s maritime safety policy, aiming to prevent loss of life and pollution at sea and along the coast. UKMS inspects and certifies ships and seafarers, enforces UK and international safety, security, and environmental standards, and manages vessel registration and pollution response.
Within UKMS, Technical Services Navigation (TSN) supports the Government’s “Safer Ships and Cleaner Seas” strategy by developing and maintaining navigation and radio-communication policy in line with international conventions such as SOLAS, COLREGs, and ITU. The Navigation Team specifically oversees areas including SOLAS V, COLREGs, Marine Licensing, Offshore Renewable Energy Installations, the Port Marine Safety Code, Categorisation of Waters, and Vessel Traffic Management.

The post holder will be a technologically focused mariner embedded in the Navigation Team to act as the team’s focal point for knowledge and liaison on matters relating to current and emerging technologies.. Working with the Nautical Policy Manager to assist and deputise when necessary in the Navigation Team’s responsibilities, including policy development, advice, and operational oversight of SOLAS Chapter V, COLREGs, and navigational safety within UK waters.
Your responsibilities would include, but aren’t limited to:
* Act as the Navigation Team’s specialist on emerging and future maritime technologies, supporting the MCA’s vision for Maritime 2050 and beyond.
* Provide expert operational advice to guide the safe implementation and regulation of new navigation systems and MASS.
* Review safety cases, exemptions, and technical submissions relating to navigation technology and vessel operations.
* Collaborate with Maritime Future Technologies and Ships Standards to shape navigation policy and regulatory development.
* Represent the MCA nationally and internationally on SOLAS V, COLREGs, and navigation safety matters.
* Support categorisation of waters, marine licensing, and wider Navigation Team projects through applied navigational expertise.
