The Security Vetting & Trade Controls Support Officer provides essential operational support to the Security Controller and Trade Controls Manager within a defence‑industry environment. The role helps ensure the organisation meets all UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) security requirements and complies with national and international export control regulations.
Working closely with security leaders, programme teams, engineers, supply chain, HR, and government authorities, the postholder supports the protection of classified information, controlled technologies, and sensitive defence related assets.
Working under the direction of the Security Controller, the postholder will:
Assist with the administration and coordination of BPSS, SC, and DV applications in accordance with GOVs007, HMG Personnel Security Controls, and MOD policy.
Review BPSS screening checks, identity verification, and pre‑employment assurance tasks.
Help manage correspondence with UKSV and applicants, ensuring timely responses and smooth processing.
Maintain accurate vetting and personnel security records in line with classification and Data Protection Act requirements.
Support insider risk awareness activities, including monitoring changes of circumstance and flagging concerns to the Security Controller. Risk awareness activities, including monitoring changes of circumstance and flagging concerns to the Security Controller.
Assist in delivering security briefings and awareness materials to staff and contractors.
Provide general administrative support for security audits, investigations, and compliance reviews.
Assist with asset administration, including maintaining accurate registers of controlled, classified, and high value assets value assets.
Support the creation, coordination, and tracking of asset movement plans, ensuring compliant movements, site security rules, and export control restrictions.
Manage or assist with asset receipting, confirming correct delivery, classification, handling, and secure storage of items upon arrival.
Help maintain secure storage facilities, controlled cabinets, and asset tracking logs, tracking logs.
Assist with regular asset musters, conducting verification checks, identifying discrepancies, and supporting follow up investigations.
Help maintain accurate audit trails for asset movements, transfers, handovers, and disposals.
Support secure destruction or return‑to-vendor processes for classified or controlled items.
Assist with physical security awareness relating to asset handling, secure movement, and responsible custodianship.

Support Trade Controls & Export Compliance
Under the guidance of the Trade Controls Manager, the postholder will:
Assist in classifying defence related goods, software, technology, and documentation against UK Military Lists and Strategic Export Control Lists.
Support the preparation and submission of SIEL, OGEL, and OIEL licence applications.
Help monitor licence conditions, maintaining registers and documentation for controlled exports and technology transfers.
Support programme teams by reviewing documents for export‑controlled content and flagging issues for escalation.
Assist with internal audits, compliance checks, and preparation for ECJU or MOD inspections.
Maintain accurate export compliance records, registers, and secure filing systems.
Help deliver awareness briefings to engineers, supply chain, and commercial staff on export control requirements.
Support reviews of international collaboration activities, including secure transfer of technical data.

Experience working in a defence, government, aerospace, or other security‑sensitive environment.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow structured processes.
Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially and responsibly.
Good communication and stakeholder‑support skills.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple ongoing tasks.
Desirable
Understanding of personnel vetting processes and classified information handling requirements.
Awareness of UK export controls, licensing processes, or defence‑related compliance frameworks.
Knowledge of GOVs007, ITAR/EAR, or ECJU licensing frameworks.
Previous experience supporting a Security Controller or export compliance function.
Professional development or interest in security, compliance, or export controls.

Additional Information
The postholder will be required to obtain and maintain SC clearance.
Occasional travel to MOD sites, defence partners, or export compliance audits may be required.
Typically, a High School Diploma (or equivalent) and related experience.
FSO Certification required

Security Clearance
This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance.
To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years' residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.

Security Requirements
This role requires you to undergo Baseline Personnel Security Standard Check (BPSS) as a minimum and some roles will require further national security vetting checks.
In line with Baseline Security requirements, candidates will be asked to provide evidence of identity, eligibility to work in the UK and employment and/or education history for up to three years. Some vacancies may require full Security Clearance which can require further evidence to be provided.
