Job Overview
We are looking for a qualified, experienced English teacher to join Harris Academy Orpington as the Head of English, starting in April or sooner. The successful candidate will hold QTS and have strong subject knowledge teaching up to and including KS5. They will be a dedicated, highly motivated practitioner with a proven track record of driving up standards and excellent interpersonal skills to join our highly committed team.
Responsibilities
* Accountable for leading, managing and developing the subject area.
* Raise standards of student attainment and achievement across the whole curriculum area, monitoring and supporting student progress.
* Ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum in accordance with the academy’s aims and the governing body’s policies.
* Teach the relevant subject across the age and ability range.
* Facilitate and encourage a learning experience that provides students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential.
* Effectively manage and deploy staff, financial and physical resources within the department.
* Share and support the school’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for personal and academic growth.
* Operational and strategic planning – formulate subject and faculty improvement plans, lead development of syllabuses, resources, schemes of work, marking policies, assessment and teaching strategies.
* Ensure delivery of a high‑quality, comprehensive and cost‑effective curriculum, leading in subject delivery.
* Staff development – recruit, build and manage an effective team of motivated staff.
* Student outcomes – operate target‑setting, monitoring and evaluation systems, maintain accurate student data.
* Pastoral system – serve as a form tutor to a selected group of students.
* Teaching – act as an outstanding role model.
Qualifications & Experience
* Hold QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree, ideally with management training.
* Demonstrate successful teaching of GCSE at a good or better level.
* Have experience of initiating and managing effective change.
* Show evidence of raising achievement in the present post and delivering good value added for groups.
* Have knowledge of current curriculum developments in the subject and their implications.
* Possess good knowledge and understanding of current educational thinking.
* Show strong understanding of how children learn and how to raise standards of achievement.
* Have excellent communication skills in speech and writing.
* Display excellent organisational skills.
* Be able to build and sustain professional standards and relationships with students.
* Be able to contribute towards creating a safe and protective environment.
