Overview

The successful candidate will work at Higher Specialty Trainee level and will be actively involved in the management of all patients aged 0-19 years, with a wide variety of solid and CNS tumours, malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions. Duties include inpatient management, on-treatment and follow-up clinics on the oncology day ward and managing a twice weekly general anaesthetic session including bone marrow aspirates and trephines, and lumbar punctures with the administration of intrathecal chemotherapy. The postholder will liaise with doctors and community nurses based in Oxfordshire and at the shared care units in the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance (TVCA). The postholder should develop the skills to prescribe chemotherapy (after appropriate training), attend multi-disciplinary team meetings and organise procedures and investigations for patients.


Responsibilities

* Participate in management of inpatients
* Manage day care activity
* Organisation of investigations and follow-up test results
* After appropriate training: perform bone marrow aspirates and trephines, and lumbar punctures with intrathecal chemotherapy
* Prescribe chemotherapy (dependent on training/experience)
* Attend multi-disciplinary team meetings and liaise with community teams; organise procedures and investigations for patients


Qualifications and Requirements

* Full GMC registration and licence to practise
* Right to work in UK
* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCPCH/MRCP or equivalent Part 1 and 2


Desirable Criteria

* Higher medical degree
* MRCPath; appropriate training in paediatrics, paediatric oncology, paediatric haematology, medical oncology, or adult haematology
* APLS or equivalent course up to date
* Trained to Level 3 safeguarding
* Previous postgraduate experience in paediatrics (or adult haematology for Adult Haematology/Medical Oncology applicants)
* Comprehensive experience and training in paediatric care or adult haematology; experience in paediatric malignant and benign haematology and paediatric oncology at tertiary level
* Laboratory training in haematology; experience in haemophilia management
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
* Evidence of teamwork, good English communication skills, and interest in teaching
* Commitment to postgraduate training and CPD
* Evidence of technical skills in paediatric haematology and oncology; motivation/leadership abilities
* Any relevant management qualification
* Specific training in communication skills
* Experience in teaching/training of undergraduates and junior doctors; contribution to clinical governance, clinical audit, patient safety and human factors
* Driving license
