Band 5 Staff Nurse - Discharge Lounge

The closing date is 02 June 2026

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Staff Nurse to join the Discharge Lounge team on a Fixed Term/Secondment basis to cover Maternity Leave. The role is for 34.5 hours a week with a fixed end date of 31st May 2027.

Discharge Lounge handles a large volume of patients every day, with an average patient stay of around 2 hours. Flexibility and adaptability are essential skills for working in this busy environment.

We are looking for a reliable, experienced individual with a demonstrated ability to self‑manage their own time and development. The post holder will practice autonomously and be responsible and accountable for safe, compassionate person‑centred evidence‑based nursing that respects and maintains dignity and human rights.

The post holder will practice in a holistic, non‑judgmental, caring and compassionate manner that avoids assumptions, supports social inclusion and recognises and respects individual choice and acknowledges diversity. They will work in partnership with other health and social care professionals, students and trainees and agencies, service users, their carers, and families. At times they will have management responsibility for overseeing the ward and supervising junior members of staff.

Main duties of the job

* Improve patient flow by identifying and screening patients suitable to come to Discharge Lounge
* Ensure TTOs, patient documentation, and patient transport requests are completed in a timely manner
* Clear communication with patient, family and other care providers


Key skills expected in this Band 5 role are:

* To be able to co‑ordinate and facilitate the patient journey
* Act as a role model and promote person‑centred care
* Ensure accurate, legible and timely documentation relating to all aspects of patients care and treatment both paper‑based and electronically
* The ability to co‑ordinate nursing interventions and monitor the quality of patient care and experience through using expert clinical knowledge relevant to own field of practice, underpinned by theory and experience

Qualifications

* Evidence of professional and clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level leading to Professional registration on the appropriate part of the NMC register i.e. (Adult / Child / Learning Disability or Mental Health)
* Evidence of undergraduate education for newly qualified nurses or post graduate continuing professional development for registered nurses who have post registration experience


Experience

* Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary health and care setting (can include undergraduate student placements within the last 12 months)
* Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor to or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
* Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct and the proficiencies and standards for registered nurses can apply this to undergraduate training or post graduate practice
* Being an accountable professional
* Promoting health and preventing ill health
* Assessing needs and planning care
* Providing and evaluating care
* Leading and managing nursing care and working in teams -- including prioritisation and delegation skills
* Coordinating care and responding to deteriorating healthImproving safety and quality of care
* Awareness of current relevant clinical and professional issues and NHS policy
* Understanding / experience of the principles of Safeguarding and Mental Capacity
* Awareness of Health and Safety issues.
* Experience in working in an Acute NHS practice setting as an undergraduate student nurse or post graduate registered nurse.


Additional Criteria

* Demonstrable communication and relationship management skills which include
* Listening -- writing -- reading -- speaking in English with understanding of contemporaneous record keeping
* Good IT skills ability to record information electronically
* Competent in a range of clinical skills/ nursing procedures willingness to undertake expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice required
* Competent in managing the care of a group of patients / shift management (take charge of the practice setting in the absence of more senior staff) relevant to the practise setting.
* Professional appearance
* Displays genuine interest in the post applied for
* Positive and enthusiastic attitude
* Caring and approachable
* Ability to work a varied shift pattern including nights / weekends unsocial hours where required
* The applicant can describe why the Trust may deploy him /her to a different practice setting for a span of duty.
