About The George

The George has been a drinking establishment since the 17th century and became a licensed pub in 1841. It is in the heart of the village of Bethersden in Kent, opposite Marchants Butchers, the Post Office and Stores, with a hairdresser and beauticians nearby. The Pub has both a public bar and lounge bar with a restaurant seating around 30 covers.


Following its closure during the Covid Pandemic, the community swung into action and raised the money to purchase and re-open the pub in May 2023.

Person specification

The role holder will be an important member of the kitchen team, assisting our Head Chef in managing kitchen operations, ensuring the highest standards of food quality and hygiene and combining the use of local produce into our great value menus.


This position requires a strong background in hospitality and culinary skills, along with excellent team working to help create a positive and efficient working environment.


As a Chef, youll:

* Work with our Head Chef to deliver a home-cooked, locally sourced pub food menu,

* Have proven experience in the hospitality, food & beverage industry.

* Adopt the standard set by the Head Chef in terms of food preparation, customer service, hygiene and health & safety.

* Work together with the rest of the team at the pub, making sure the responsibilities are carried out and we deliver great service to our customers.

* Work collaboratively with the Front of House Manager and Head Chef, to identify and resolve issues promptly and constructively, as well as help us improve the pub in the medium term.

* Be flexible, including working evenings, weekends and bank holidays given the demands of a village pub, including serving in the bar, cafe and restaurant when needed.

* Adhere to the legal requirements of running a licensed premises, including following the operating procedures laid out in our Code of Conduct at all times.

Responsibilities:


Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Preparing and delivering the majority of dishes before being served to the customers whilst on shift.

2. Approving all other dishes prepared by the kitchen team before serving.

3. Being responsive to customers' needs, making sure you and the rest of the team act in a timely and positive manner, including allergen and dietary requirements.

4. Maintain the agreed profit margins on food, minimising food waste whilst delivering the high standards set by the Head Chef.

5. Working with the Front of House Manager or Supervisor to coordinate effective and efficient food service, including pre-service joint briefings.

6. Updating our Front of House team proactively with any menu or availability changes while on shift and handling walk-ins constructively, balancing quality of customer service and maximising capacity to keep the business profitable.

7. Where needed, cleaning and washing up both during and after service, keeping the kitchen in a clean and tidy state at all times.

8. Completing and signing-off daily and weekly tasks when on duty, including deep cleans, Health and Safety and ordering supplies using the approved supplier list as directed by the Head Chef.

9. Adhering to our legal and operating procedures laid out in our Code of Conduct.

10. Undertaking basic troubleshooting of any equipment faults and failures and calling out contractors as per our Approved contact list, to repair equipment etc. as necessary.

11. Support the Front of House Manager and Head Chef with events at the pub, as needed.


Qualifications & Experience

* Chef experience in a similar size kitchen operation 2+ years (required)

* Food Hygiene Certification Level 2 (required)

* Food & drink industry 1+ years (required)

* Managing people 1+ years (desirable)

Location & references

The candidate must have the right to work in the UK and the ability to commute or relocate to Bethersden, TN26 3AG.


References from previous employment will be required. We will also need to undertake a criminal record (DBS) and Right to Work checks.
