South Yorkshire Police - Superintendent / Detective Superintendent - September 2025

The force is seeking applications from substantive Chief Inspectors/Detective Chief Inspectors or substantive Superintendents/Detective Superintendents looking to transfer, to join SYP in delivering the best service ensuring the force continues to improve, delivering the highest quality service for members of the public.
The process will be extremely competitive with only the very best candidates aligned to our values being successful.
Please note, chief inspectors applying to this role must have 18 months of substantive service – periods of continuous temporary service will be counted.
About The Role
Our Superintendents play a critical lead role in operational policing and are responsible for large and / or complex areas of command and across strategic alliances and partnerships. To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate effective and impactful leadership qualities, encouraging a culture of innovation and creativity.
Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate professional policing skills and active participation or accreditation in public order, firearms or crime.
You will play an intrinsic part in ensuring the public receives the very best service from us, by working proactively and collaboratively with colleagues. The key aims of South Yorkshire Police should always be at the forefront of everything you do.

All candidates who register their application; will receive a formal application form via email which will include answering two CVF based questions. Candidates will also need to include written Line Manager comments and sign off from their Chief Superintendent – this can be uploaded to Oracle as an attachment, along with a copy of your last completed PDR (prior to the new oracle system PDR).
Step 2 - Information Events - Register your interest
You may be interested in attending one of our online information events, to help with understanding our application processes and what to expect. These are non-mandatory are hosted by our Talent Team and supported by our Leadership team to provide an insight into South Yorkshire Police and provide recent experiences at this rank.

Step 3: Application Questions & Leadership Support
Your application questions will be emailed to you along with the support templates for your Line Manager and Chief Superintendent to complete.
This will be used as part of a shortlisting process to select suitable candidates for interviews. These are assessed by Chief Officers; against the Competency and Values Framework (CVF) and scored one to five, successful applications will need to meet the pass mark of three on both questions to be shortlisted.

For external applicants –
we encourage that support is obtained in advance of your application and you include this on your formal application form. Though we appreciate you may not have informed your current force of your intentions. If so, satisfactory support will be required for successful applicants as part of your references, in line with our offer and onboarding processes.
Step 3: Interview
:
Interviews will take place one of the following dates:
3 rd, 4 th 7 th 14 th November 2025
Panels chaired by the Chief Constable, with the Deputy Chief Constable, supported by an external independent panel member.
Any additional information or preparation required for this stage will be shared with candidates who are selected through the initial shortlisting stage.
Further Information
SYP is running the 2025 Superintendent promotion process to fill approximately two vacancies, with deployment expected in Dec 2025/Jan 2026. These include detective and uniformed postings across South Yorkshire. If you are successful at interview, please expect to be posted in accordance with force demand. Consideration will be given to any restrictions on location of deployment where possible, however filling vacancies based on force demand is a priority.
After we have met the current force demand, we may utilise a select list to have a pool of candidates who meet the benchmark to be promoted to Superintendent rank and will be posted throughout 2026.
