This is an excellent opportunity to join our Respiratory Service on Ward 20 Enhanced High Care Unit at Royal Preston Hospital; We currently have a vacancy for a band 6 senior nurse.

You must also be highly motivated with excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills and can work within a multidisciplinary team setting.

Ideally, you should have current relevant post-registration experience working within the respiratory specialty. You’ll lead from the front and be an excellent role model for the team ensuring the ward is well-led, whilst developing key leadership skills that will stand you in good stead in terms of further opportunities and career development

Main duties of the job

You will support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse or Matron in ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for within or by the department, service or team.

You will also be responsible for ensuring the planning, delivery, and evaluation of care to meet the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of patients, in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework

You will also strong leadership and direction to the team, monitoring and maintaining standards of care and professional practice to support day to day efficient running of the clinical area, service

In addition, you will act as a strong role model and provide development, clinical supervision and advice for other staff and students to support them in reaching their full potential. Actively engage in research and development opportunities for the service.

Your role will ensure the productive operation of the unit environment through the maintenance of a safe, clean and organised environment

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidence-based guidelines.

Support and provide patient education and health promotion.

Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff.

Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.

Assist in setting, monitoring and maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.

Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.

Maintain accurate and complete records of all care activities, in a timely manner, adhering to local and professional standards for documentation.

Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation.

Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.

Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.

To participate in education and training of junior staff.

Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice.

Proactively engage with Trust wide or local changes and developments in nursing practice e.g intentional rounding, alcohol screening.

Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level and then report the outcome to line manager.

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

1. Appropriate NMC Registration
2. Diploma or Degree in Nursing
3. Evidence of continuing professional education or development in area of speciality

Desirable criteria

4. Degree
5. Post registration qualification in speciality area
6. NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or demonstrable mentoring experience and willingness to complete course

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

7. Evidence of leadership experience and learning.
8. Awareness of recent advances within Nursing practice
9. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and safeguarding and the relevance to practice
10. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
11. Experience of implementing changes to benefit patients and improve nursing practice
12. Knowledge of Ethical issues

Desirable criteria

13. Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality e.g. surgery
14. Knowledge of Research and Development
