Title: Imaging Advanced Practice and Innovation Lead Radiographer

Department: Imaging

Hours: Full time, 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

We are looking for an accomplished Imaging Advanced Practice & Innovation Lead to join our forward-thinking imaging leadership team. In this key role, you will drive the highest standards in diagnostic imaging and interventional procedures, champion advanced practice principles, and enhance the overall patient experience.

As part of our service expansion, we are pleased to offer a newly created Band 8A position. This role will spearhead innovation within imaging services, integrating both workforce development and digital technologies to transform patient care.

You will lead and manage advanced practice initiatives, focusing on safety and increased efficiency. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape the future of imaging services within our state-of-the-art, purpose-built facilities.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will collaborate with a variety of local, regional, and national partners to support the development, implementation, and delivery of innovative and advanced practice solutions. They will also help establish effective performance measures to monitor progress. Key responsibilities include:

Leading the adoption of new technologies within imaging services.

Ensuring robust information governance and support systems are in place.

Enhancing the Trust's capability and capacity for growth in imaging innovation and advanced practice.

Maximising opportunities for innovation and advanced practice in imaging.

Establishing and monitoring key performance indicators relevant to imaging innovation and advanced practice.

Developing business cases that showcase innovation and advanced practice, highlighting cost efficiencies in service delivery. The role requires delivering expert-level diagnostic imaging services, utilizing advanced clinical skills across a broad range of imaging modalities. You will work autonomously within established guidelines, collaborating closely with key stakeholders within our Trust.

As a medium sized general hospital, we provide a full range of general medical and surgical services, including a busy Emergency Department, Maternity, and Paediatrics. As the population of our city and surrounding areas continues to grow rapidly, we are expanding and enhancing our facilities to meet rising demand and improve access to care for all our communities.

We are also proud to offer a growing portfolio of specialist services. In January 2025 we opened our state-of-the-art Radiotherapy Centre, bringing advanced cancer treatment closer to home. Our services also include neonatology, specialist surgical care, and a wide range of diagnostics, supported by the new Community Diagnostic Centre at Whitehouse Health Centre.

Further investment is underway, including the construction of Oak Wards - a new ward block featuring two 24-bed wards - and the recently approved Women and Children's Centre, set to open by 2030.

Job responsibilities

To engage with other clinicians across professions in the development and advancement of innovative practice requiring the planning and organisation of a broad range of complex issues and components in order to formulate plans and strategies to implement improved service delivery.

To lead evidence-based reconfiguration of existing clinical practices through clinical audit and research to underpin and inform changes of clinical practice.

Present information and participate in meetings, including imaging and divisional meetings.

Person Specification


Qualifications and knowledge

* DCR or BSc Diagnostic Radiographer degree or equivalent
* Current HCPC registration
* Post graduate qualification in relevant clinical area or equivalent experience.
* Current knowledge and understanding of the NHS constitution
* Trust vision, values, and strategic objectives
* Able to practically apply a range of specialist knowledge and expertise to leadership of given service areas
* Knowledge of CQC, UKAS QSI accreditation and how they relate to the acute and imaging setting.
* Able to provide effective clinical leadership, motivating and inspiring others
* Lead on evidence-based reconfiguration of existing clinical practices through clinical audit and research.
* Provide high level of expertise in specialist clinical field of diagnostic imaging.
* Able to analyse and review a range of diverse and highly complex and sometimes conflicting information
* Understand relevant legislation relating to Imaging, Clinical Governance, Health and Safety, NHS codes of conduct and employment law.
* Knowledge of a wide range of best imaging practice and improvement processes
* Strategic awareness within healthcare
* Holds clinical knowledge and experience working at a senior level in the acute setting.
* Ability to engage with other clinicians across professions to develop and advance practice.
* Knowledge of relevant national imaging standards (e.g., IR(ME)R 2017, IRR '17 and associated codes of practice)
* Evidence of a sound level of computer literacy (MS Teams, Word, Outlook, Power Point and Excel)
* Familiarity with hospital information systems (HIS), radiology information systems (RIS) and picture archiving communications systems (PACS)
* Post graduate management or project management qualification or equivalent experience.
