Job overview

This post is central to delivering effective patient care at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be primarily based in Winchester but you may be asked to attend other sites as required. The post will be involved in all aspects of diagnosis and treatment of patients. The post holder would be on the resident 1st on call rota supporting in Critical Care overnight.

Main duties of the job

Duties include being part of the 1st on call rota, when you will be covering theatres and the Critical Care Unit. This is supported by a consultant in intensive care and consultant general anaesthetist, both non-resident. The majority of clinical work will be in RHCH main theatres or Day Treatment Centre, anaesthetising for a variety of surgical specialties. There is opportunity to develop confidence anaesthetising for major surgical cases or particular sub-specialties, under consultant supervision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to:

• Support the delivery of a high quality 24 hour anaesthetic service

• Work flexibly dependent on the exigencies of the department

• Show a determination to meet or exceed the standards of the Patients’ Charter

• Assist in our determination to be a successful provider of a range of appropriate services to the local community

The Trust is keen to attract the highest calibre of trainee doctors. It realises that to maintain that aim for the future the quality of teaching and training must be of the highest order. Consultant staff are responsible for the training and supervision of all junior medical staff and time is expected to be regularly allocated to their teaching. All College and Faculty tutors regularly meet with the Postgraduate Clinical Tutor, to discuss training and postgraduate educational matters.

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. BM or equivalent
2. Licence to practice & full registration with GMC
3. Basic Level Training Certificate in Anaesthesia (or equivalent if you have not completed a UK core anaesthetic training programme)

Desirable criteria

4. Passed Primary FRCA
5. Passed Final FRCA
6. Life Support Course Instructor

Clinical Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria

7. 24 months experience in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care medicine from a UK core training programme (or equivalent)
8. An ability to cover Intensive Care and General Anaesthetic duties in both the elective and emergency setting

Desirable criteria

9. Worked in the UK's NHS
10. Taught on life support or deteriorating patient courses (e.g. ALERT course)
11. Experience in obstetric anaesthesia

Clinical Skills & Ability

Essential criteria

12. Excellent communication skills
13. Ability to establish & maintain good professional relations with others
14. Punctual & reliable
15. Manual dexterity performing clinical procedures

Desirable criteria

16. Teaching Skills

17. Physically and mentally fit with satisfactory occupational health clearance
18. Able to work evenings and weekends
