Overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join our integrated in-patient Therapy Team at the Whittington Hospital. Therapy Assistants provide essential support to the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists, working to assess and treat patients to improve their function after illness or injury. We are a friendly and supportive team driven to provide timely, safe and compassionate care to our patients. There is opportunity to rotate to different work teams and specialities to gain skills, knowledge and experience of working with patients with a wide variety of clinical presentations. You will work with members of the multi-disciplinary team and community providers supporting patients to be safely discharged from hospital. The candidates must be organised with excellent communication and time management skills and IT literacy. Recent previous experience of working with people or in a customer facing role and/or previous NHS experience and qualifications in a therapy or healthcare related subject would be desirable.
Responsibilities
* Be responsible for a caseload of patients working to agreed treatment objectives and to assist qualified therapy staff in the treatment of patients who require more than one therapist for safe handling, complex rehabilitation.
* To be responsible for implementing prescribed treatment programmes with an allocated patient caseload through competency-based assessment and within agreed scope of practice, following an initial screening by a qualified Occupational Therapist / Physiotherapist.
* Participate in Orthopaedic weekend rota and START Team weekend rota under the guidance of a qualified physiotherapist/occupational therapist.
* General clinical duties include gathering demographic and medical data to inform assessment, supervising and progressing exercise/mobility programmes, gait re-education and progression of mobility, and group work relevant to the client group.
Clinical - General
* To gain experience in implementing prescribed treatment programmes and to work within a defined scope of practice after an initial screening by a qualified therapist.
Communication
To gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment. To establish and maintain effective communication with all members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), the therapy department and external agencies to ensure effective and efficient treatment and discharge.
Safeguarding
To comply with the Trust's Safeguarding Children and Adults policies, procedures and protocols. All staff have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. This will require you to:
* Ensure familiarity with and compliance with the London Child Protection Procedures and protocols for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.
* Ensure familiarity with and compliance with the London Multi-Agency Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Pan London Procedures.
* Ensure familiarity with local protocols and systems for information sharing.
* Know the appropriate contact numbers and required reporting lines.
* Participate in required training and supervision.
* Comply with required professional boundaries and codes of conduct.
