Purchasing & Stores Manager
Location: Barnsley
Annual Salary: £70,000
An exciting opportunity for an experienced Purchasing & Stores Manager to join a major UK manufacturer at their fabrication and production facility in Barnsley. The role is pivotal in supporting global supply chain operations and ensuring a world‑class approach to purchasing, materials flow, and internal logistics.
Responsibilities
- Develop, manage and coach a dedicated purchasing team.
- Drive supplier development and world‑class logistics performance.
- Implement secure, efficient purchasing strategies aligned with business needs.
- Manage cost control, contract negotiations and strategic sourcing activities.
- Align stocking policies with planning, scheduling and safety stock requirements.
- Coach and develop the stock control team.
- Deliver continuous improvement using IT systems, data automation and logistics optimisation.
- Ensure accuracy in inventory, PI counts and annual stock takings.
- Manage a supplier portfolio exceeding £10M spend.
- Negotiate robust, commercially secure supply contracts.
- Develop structured global supply bases with dual‑source capability.
- Implement KPIs, scorecards and supplier performance monitoring.
- Conduct supplier audits, tenders and strategic partner development.
- Support NPI projects and production launches.
- Ensure effective purchasing planning and MRP parameter management.
- Achieve cost reductions through engineering, sourcing and logistics initiatives.
- Lead logistics strategy aligned to purchasing and global supply chain needs.
- Manage stock accuracy, slow‑moving/obsolete inventory and discrepancy investigations.
- Maintain ISO 9001/14001/18001 compliance.
- Create and maintain process documentation and training materials.
Qualifications
- 5+ years in senior purchasing, commodity management or supply chain with a background in steel, fabrication and machined components.
- Experience in single‑piece‑flow production environments.
- Strong MRP knowledge and Microsoft Office skills.
- Proven experience in internal logistics & inventory management.
- Strong negotiation skills and experience with contract management.
- Willingness to travel globally for supplier support.
- Experience with lean, supplier auditing and PPAP/QPAP processes.
Additional Qualifications
- CIPS qualification (or working towards).
- Experience with open‑book costing and PPV.
- Exposure to automotive supply chain standards.
