Job overview

Starlight Children’s Unit is a general paediatric ward caring for babies, children and young people with a variety of acute medical and surgical conditions. We undertake level 1 critical care. We have close links with the child and adolescent mental health team and provide care for children and young people experiencing mental health difficulties. We also have close links with the children’s community nursing team, allowing us to promote early discharge where this is clinically safe, enabling patients to continue with treatment in their home. We are part of the North Thames Paediatric Network which provides us with education and training links to Barts Health and Great Ormond street Hospital.

Main duties of the job

You will work closely with our Practice Development Nurse and ward manager to ensure that staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills to work clinically following policy and procedure to provide safe and effective care to the children and families of City and Hackney. You will support us to achieve the trust strategy aims : Improve the health and wellbeing of our communities; deliver outstanding, equitable care; develop happy, healthy, heard staff and foster innovation, improvement and learning. Your own learning and development will be supported through access to a comprehensive catalogue of training and development including access to relevant university modules and support to develop skills in areas such as leadership or resilience based clinical supervision.

We would be keen to hear from individuals who have experience of working clinically within paediatric nursing as well as have a passion for leadership and development.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Registered Nurse - Child/RSCN
2. Evidence of continuing professional development.
3. APLS/EPALS or willingness to undertake.
4. Mentorship module/practice assessor.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

5. Knowledge and understanding of health care needs in a multicultural society
6. Knowledge of health promotion activities and strategies.
7. Expert knowledge of specialist field and treatments.
8. Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of clinical governance e.g. risk management, audit.
9. Commitment to quality initiatives across the Trust, Division and within the department.

Desirable criteria

10. Ability to develop standards, guidelines and policies

Skills/ Abilities

Essential criteria

11. Teaching skills in informal and formal situations.
12. Demonstrates awareness of the importance of working in a multi disciplinary team.
13. Evidence of involvement in change management and improvement projects.
14. Recent evidence of developing nursing practice
15. Clinical expert in children’s nursing skills for general paediatrics
16. Established organisational and leadership skills.
17. Innovative, able to problem solve and make autonomous decisions.
18. Good understanding of safeguarding issues and policy framework
19. Communicates with patients and carers in an empathetic manner
20. Presentation skills

Experience

Essential criteria

21. Significant experience at senior band 5 or band 6 in acute paediatric nursing.
22. Experience in caring for children with level 1 Critical Care. Requirements: i.e. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and Heated High Flow Humidified Therapy.
23. Experience as a supervisor to students and preceptor to newly registered nurses.
