The Role
We are seeking an experienced Head of Compliance to lead and further develop our compliance function. The role will support the business in meeting FCA expectations and consistently delivering fair customer outcomes. You will shape the compliance strategy, oversee regulatory adherence across the entire credit lifecycle, and act as a senior advisor to the leadership team.
This role is ideal for someone with deep technical knowledge of consumer credit regulation and hands‑on experience managing compliance in a fast‑paced lending organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Compliance Leadership & Strategy
* Lead the Compliance function, setting the direction for regulatory compliance and Consumer Duty implementation.
* Develop, maintain, and embed the Compliance Framework, including policies, monitoring plans, training, and governance structures.
* Provide independent challenge, advice, and assurance to senior leadership and Board committees.
Regulatory Oversight & FCA Relationship
* Ensure full compliance with FCA rules (CONC, SYSC, DISP, Consumer Duty, financial crime).
* Manage regulatory interactions, notifications, periodic returns, and responses to FCA enquiries.
Consumer Duty & Customer Outcomes
* Oversee product governance, vulnerable customer arrangements, outcome testing, and fair value assessments.
* Ensure that lending, collections, and complaint‑handling practices align with Consumer Duty and responsible lending obligations.
Compliance Monitoring & Assurance
* Lead the compliance monitoring programme, ensuring timely testing, reporting, and remediation.
* Oversee thematic reviews, root‑cause analysis, and assurance activities across the business.
* Escalate high‑risk issues and ensure clear action plans are in place and tracked to resolution.
* Review policy and process changes to ensure regulatory alignment and mitigate conduct risk.
Governance, Reporting & MI
* Provide high‑quality MI and reporting to the Board.
* Lead policy governance, ensuring documents are current, accurate, and aligned to FCA expectations.
* Oversee breach and incident reporting, ensuring timely escalation, investigation, and closure.
* Oversee AML/CTF, fraud prevention, sanctions screening, and suspicious activity escalation.
* Support the MLRO/Deputy MLRO with regulatory compliance and financial crime governance.
* Manage and develop the Compliance team, ensuring strong capability, technical knowledge, and succession planning.
* Build a strong compliance culture through training, coaching, and business engagement.
Skills and Experience
* A minimum of bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in compliance, legal or other control‑related function in the financial services firm (in particular consumer credit), or legal/consulting firm
* Significant previous experience in a regulatory role, ideally working mid to senior
* Detailed knowledge of the FCA Handbook, particularly SYSC, CONC, COCON, CDD, KYC, and EDD and how they apply to the consumer credit environment
* Diploma course by the International Compliance Association (ICA)
* Experience presenting and reporting to management teams
* Good knowledge of AML requirements
* Experience in back‑office consumer credit operations, an advantage gained through a compliance function
* Excels with high levels of discretion, managing and communicating with staff at all organisational levels, from senior management to individual contributors
* Comfortable working in a fast‑paced and innovative environment both with a high degree of collaboration and autonomy
* Ability to analyse, present and report regulatory information to senior stakeholders in a clear and concise manner
