Band 6 Community Learning Disability Nurse - CAMHS

To work as a Community Learning Disability Nurse in the Child and Adolesce Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Learning Disability Team.

To ensure a clinically effective, high quality nursing service provided to children and young people with learning disabilities and their families/carers.

The post holder must be clinically competent to hold an active caseload, and provide support, advice, healthcare and health promotion as well as initial and on-going holistic health assessment to children and young people with learning disabilities and their families/carers, whilst working as part of, and promoting joint working within CAMHS Learning Disability Service.

The post holder will help to improve early identification of challenging behaviour and mental health issues in children and young people with moderate to profound learning disabilities.

The post holder will help with improving the quality of support to children and young people with moderate to profound learning disabilities who are based within specialist educational settings.

To work closely with the CAMHS Learning Disability Psychiatrist, Psychologist and Team Manager to review, audit and help implement strategic changes to CAMHS Learning Disability Service to achieve targets in line with government initiatives.


Main duties of the job

* To adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for nurses, midwives and health visitors and be conversant with the scope of Professional Practice and other NMC papers.
* To be responsible for an identified, complex caseload of young people diagnosed with a moderate to severe learning disability and comorbid mental health difficulty.
* To act as a role model and motivate team members towards an innovative and high standard of practice that is research/evidenced based.
* Ensure contemporaneous records are maintained.
* Promote a team approach to care within a multi-disciplinary framework, involving liaison and effective communication of confidential and sensitive information with other statutory and voluntary agencies.
* Ensure that community learning disability nursing service develops in line with BSMHFT core values and outcomes, whilst following government recommendations and public health initiatives.
* To work autonomously and effectively as part of community learning disability nursing service whilst managing own caseload.
* To ensure the legal frameworks relevant to work undertaken within BSMHFT Specialist Learning Disability Service are adhered to and followed.
* To support and work closely with colleagues as part of an MDT within SOLAR and other professionals working at different levels outside of the organisation to support the needs of children and young people.

Person Specification

* Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse educated to Diploma/Degree Level
* Professional registration with regulating body e.g NMC
* Significant experience working with young people with ASD & Learning Disability in a community setting
* Knowledge and experience of working within community mental health services and holding a complex caseload
* Experience of working in Community CAMHS
* Skills with Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
