A little more about your role…
We are seeking an enthusiastic Principal Consultant to support our regional Development Team in Leeds, specialising in Transportation and Development Planning.
You will work within a team providing sustainable development solutions from site selection through to planning approvals and implementation. The development planning transport work involves providing specialist advice to private sector and some local authority clients on residential and mixed-use development led and masterplanning projects, including on access, transportation, and infrastructure issues, supporting development proposals through the planning process. The team takes a strategic lead on many large multi-disciplinary projects, working closely with planning, infrastructure design, structures, transport, and environmental teams. The team also collaborates on high-profile projects across the UK, Ireland, and internationally.
You can expect to be active on several projects and client accounts simultaneously. You will report to a senior member of the Development Team. Our team works on some of the most prestigious developments regionally, nationally, and internationally, delivering projects such as:
* The Highways, West Yorkshire
* Sutton Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, London Borough of Sutton
* International Advanced Manufacturing Park, Wearside
* Tritax Symmetry Park Kettering, Northamptonshire
* Tritax Symmetry Park Gloucester, Gloucestershire
* Prologis Park Marston Gate, Bedfordshire
* Prologis Park Coleshill, Warwickshire
Our Leeds office has a strong regional focus, but project work is located throughout the UK and internationally, with designs delivered from Leeds and/or collaboratively across offices, with some travel when appropriate.
* Support in delivering concept studies, Transport Statements, Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, Parking Studies, Access Studies, and Movement and Access Studies, leading to planning applications and post-permission works.
* Provide proactive management and leadership to foster collaborative relationships with clients, colleagues, and staff.
* Establish and maintain effective relationships with key clients based on excellent service, technical competence, and satisfaction.
* Stay updated with relevant standards and policies; raise WSP profile through networking and conferences.
* Support and guide technical staff of various grades.
* Engage in high-profile client interactions, stakeholder management, design team liaison, and project management.
* Ensure projects are delivered within budget, on time, and meet technical and legal standards.

* We assist clients in promoting, implementing, and managing sustainable development, from pre-feasibility to planning consent, and guide future development and multidisciplinary design from concept to construction.
* We collaborate with public and private sector land promoters, house builders, developers, architects, government, and local authorities. Our services include:
o Site appraisal and strategic planning advice
o Concept studies and strategies
o Transport Statements, Assessments, and Travel Plans
o Parking Demand Studies
o Access and Movement Studies
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
* A first degree in Transport, Mathematics, Geography, Civil Engineering, Planning, or related field.
* Experience as a lead client contact for consultancy services, fostering excellent relationships.
* Strong communication skills with a proven record of compelling written work.
* Knowledge of transport planning guidance and best practices.
* Experience delivering transport planning projects across various areas, including development planning, scheme delivery, sustainable transport, junction design, and standards.
* Knowledge of junction modelling software like Junctions 9 (PICADY & ARCADY) and Linsig, with mentoring experience.
* High numeracy, problem-solving, and innovative thinking skills.
* Experience managing projects financially and in terms of schedule using business tools.
* Team management experience, including line management and operations.
* Understanding of financial and contractual aspects of planning and project delivery.
* Postgraduate experience or working towards Chartership, or equivalent commercial experience.
