Overview

UNPAID VOLUNTEER - Head of Standards Development at Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI). This is a voluntary, unpaid role based remotely (home-based). The BCI is an international volunteers-led think tank supporting and advocating the application of blockchain technology in the global fight against climate change. The Head of Standards Development shapes and advances standards within the Emerging Technologies Division (ETD) and reports to the CTO, collaborating with the Director of Legal Research. This is a senior leadership position that involves strategic leadership, stakeholder collaboration, and driving innovation through standardisation.

All roles at BCI are voluntary and unpaid. You will have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of experts, collaborate with leading organisations and stakeholders in climate and sustainability, and contribute to knowledge and innovation in this domain.


Responsibilities

* Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive standards strategy aligned with the division’s goals; collaborate with senior management to integrate standards into the division’s overall vision.
* Standards Development: Lead the development, review, and adoption of technical standards related to emerging technologies (including ISO, CEN, BSI and more); engage with industry experts, research institutions, and regulatory bodies; ensure standards are relevant, forward-looking, and adaptable.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Work with BCI divisions (ETD and Legal) and external bodies to develop standards and incorporate them into regulation; represent the division in industry forums and standardisation bodies; foster partnerships for collaboration and knowledge sharing; contribute to applying for funding for standards work.
* Quality Assurance: Oversee the quality and consistency of standards documents; ensure regulatory compliance and best practices; monitor impact on innovation and technology adoption.
* Standardization Road-mapping: Develop roadmaps for adoption and implementation of standards across technology domains; identify gaps and prioritize standardization efforts.
* Team Management: Lead a team of standards professionals, provide mentorship, foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.


Requirements


Education & Training

* Bachelor’s or master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field
* Fluent in English
* Aptitude in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish (desirable)


Relevant Experience

* At least 10 years of professional experience in Information Technology or a related field
* Strong project management and reporting skills with a focus on inter-departmental and inter-organisational communication
* Experience working independently and with teams to drive projects using initiative


Skills & Abilities

* Excellent oral communication, relationship-building, and ability to work across professional boundaries and with stakeholders at all levels
* Strong organizational skills and ability to balance competing demands
* Proven ability in computing or math-related tasks in Agile technology projects
* Experience in building constructive relationships with stakeholders and leading a team of researchers
* Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills with ability to convey ideas persuasively


General & Specialist Knowledge

* Strong knowledge of DLT/Blockchain, AI, IoT, and Quantum technology and standards
* Experience leading technology teams and projects with Agile methodologies, budgeting, reporting, and documentation
* Passionate about climate and sustainability issues, with willingness to learn beyond technology
* Exposure to international standards bodies (ISO, CEN, BSI) and related experience
* Familiar with funding bodies and funding opportunities for standards work
