Overview

Opportunity to join a newly developed low secure forensic learning disability service based on Turner ward, Shaftesbury Clinic, South West London & St George's Mental Health NHS Trust. The service sits within the Specialist Service Line of the Trust and is part of the South London Mental Health and Community Partnership (SLP) Forensic Provider Collaborative (PC).

The post holder will join a multidisciplinary team with strong CPD opportunities. The role offers a permanent appointment with access to a tailored management leadership programme and enhanced benefits including a relocation package (up to £8,000; terms and conditions apply).


Main duties

The Consultant will provide medical leadership to Turner LDA ward (a 12-bed low secure ward within the Shaftesbury building at Springfield Hospital). The post holder will work closely with the ward manager and the wider service to ensure safe, efficient and effective service delivery aligned with the Trust's KPIs and the SLP Forensic PC objectives. From January 2022 the unit is housed in a state-of-the-art secure building on the Springfield Hospital site. The ward serves patients with intellectual disabilities who may also have autism, supported by a full multidisciplinary team to assess and treat coexisting mental disorders and to provide appropriate therapies.

The Consultant will have day-to-day clinical responsibility for care, risk assessment and management, treatment and rehabilitation. They will receive robust support from the service Matron, Associate Clinical Director, Clinical Director, Medical Director and Chief Executive as necessary.

Responsibilities

* Provide medical leadership within the multidisciplinary team and offer cross-cover to other Consultant psychiatrists and, when needed, to the Associate Clinical Director within the service line.

Qualifications and Requirements

* Primary Medical Degree
* Full GMC registration
* MRCPsych or equivalent; included on the GMC Specialist Register for Forensic or Learning Disability Psychiatry or eligible for inclusion within three months of completing CCT
* Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act
* Approved Clinician status with S12 approval


Knowledge, Experience and Skills

* Minimum three years of full-time training in approved higher psychiatric training
* Knowledge of treatment approaches for intellectual disabilities and autism, risk assessment and management, interface with the Criminal Justice system and forensic inpatient settings
* Desirable: ICETR process experience; teaching of medical and non-medical staff


Audits, Management and Research

* Commitment to clinical audit and research; working with allied agencies and carers groups
* Desirable: service planning and development; experience with third sector partners
* Essential: participation in research and outcomes; publication or dissemination may be desirable


Teaching

* Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry
* Desirable: Teaching qualification and evidence of positive student feedback
