Junior Sister/Charge Nurse - Ward 21

On Ward 21 we work closely with our Gastroenterology team and consultants to provide specialist care to our IBD and hepatology patients. You will be required to support your team in taking charge and ensure the day to day smooth and safe running of the ward and act in the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse's behalf during their absence and escalate appropriately.

Main duties of the job
We take pride in ensuring our patients have a positive stay on our ward so you will be expected to help carry out audits and act as a role model in demonstrating a caring and professional manner towards all our staff and patients. With your clear communication skills, motivation and caring approach you must have the ability to apply this appropriately to deal with complaints when they arise and problem solve. With support and training you will be expected to help carry out yearly appraisals for staff, manage sickness absence, ensure the ward is adequately staffed and offer support to new and junior staff within the ward. Ward 21 is a 28 bedded Gastroenterology Specialist unit which accommodates male and female inpatients, caring for patients with a range of gastroenterological and general medical conditions. Our patients are admitted as emergencies via our Accident and Emergency department, our Emergency Assessment Unit and patients that require our specialist care from other wards. The postholder will be required to deputise in the absence of the Ward Manager and ensure a positive patient experience through the delivery of the high standards of patient care. As a Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, you should have the commitment and ability to support the Ward Manager and other Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses in the effective implementation of change. You will be required to facilitate effective management of clinical and non-clinical risk reporting in response to the service needs.

Job responsibilities
To take responsibility for the assessments of the care needs; the development, implementation and evaluation of care to ensure the highest possible standards of care are received by patients.
To supervise and teach other nursing and non-nursing staff, acting as an excellent clinical role model and team leader to ensure quality care is delivered to the patients
The post holder will demonstrate expert knowledge and practice in the delivery of patient care, therefore experience of working within this unit's environment is essential. You are expected to communicate effectively with patients and relatives; ensuring accurate and seamless information is conveyed and documented.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Current Registered Nurse with the NMC
* Degree in Nurse related specialty or working towards
* Mentorship / Practice Supervisor & Practice Assessor Preparation or teaching qualification or working towards
Experience
* Post registration experience of working in an acute hospital setting
* Evidence of teaching others
* Experience of managing staff capability, conduct and sickness absence at the early stages
Knowledge
* Has been involved in the management of change and complaints within the department
* Evidence of recruiting and inducting new staff
