Overview
An opportunity has arisen within The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Pain Management to develop a world-class pain service at a leading UK orthopaedic hospital. The Pain Management Service will be integral to patient recovery, perioperative care, non-surgical pathways and complex rehabilitation. The successful applicant will work with expert pain nurses, specialist physiotherapists, a clinical psychologist and surgical teams to develop patient-centred pathways, interventional pain procedures and embed a biopsychosocial model in musculoskeletal and post-surgical pain management.

Main duties of the job
* Deliver specialist nursing care and provide highly specialist advice and support within the pain service MDT and to organisational colleagues.
* Ensure autonomous practice in the specialist area with a high level of experience, highly advanced clinical skills and a broad in-depth theoretical knowledge base.
* Evaluate and triage referrals into the pain service; provide care from the initial appointment, including history taking, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, evaluation and discharge.
* Demonstrate safe clinical decision-making and provide expert care for patients with highly complex pain problems in various settings.
* Lead and take responsibility for the nursing component of the pain service; work with the multi-disciplinary pain management team to deliver integrated care and policy procedures.
* Provide leadership and supervision to delegated team members and share expert knowledge with healthcare professionals within RJAH and with patients and families.

Job responsibilities
Full description attached. The post holder will:
* Have a good understanding of the complex pain referral pathway; evaluate, scrutinise, accept/reject and process referrals in collaboration with primary and secondary care teams.
* Conduct full assessments of patients with undifferentiated/undiagnosed problems using advanced clinical skills to establish a diagnosis and develop a management plan.
* Hold a high level of specialist knowledge to support patients with additional learning needs or disabilities; assist in developing and setting up new patient services/clinics/pathways.
* Be a non-medical prescriber with highly specialist knowledge of medications used for pain.
* Demonstrate advanced teaching, sharing and innovation skills.
Person Specification
Essential
* Qualifications: First Level Degree; NMC Specialist Registration Independent prescriber; evidence of continuing CPD to masters level or equivalent.
Desirable
* Pain Management course at degree level; ACT/CBT training; more extensive pain management experience.
Experience
* Highly competent clinician with advanced clinical reasoning in pain management; understanding of complex pain management related to pain processing, chronic pain and musculoskeletal pain.
Skills & Competencies
* Ability to navigate differing views within a multidisciplinary team and work toward conflict resolution; critical analytical skills.
Knowledge
* Knowledge of NICE, Royal College of Anaesthetists Faculty of Pain Medicine and British Pain Society guidelines; expertise in acute, chronic and musculoskeletal pain management; awareness of health, safety and clinical governance in pain service practice.
Additional
* Desirable: training in TENS, Acupuncture, ACT.
