POSITION SUMMARY
Westside Middle School is seeking a committed and passionate TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Teacher to support the academic and linguistic development of Multilingual Learners (MLs). The successful candidate will deliver targeted English language development (ELD) instruction and bilingual academic support while fostering a culturally responsive and inclusive classroom environment. This role requires collaboration with colleagues, engagement with families, and a commitment to the academic success and well-being of all students.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide direct English language development (ELD) instruction to Multilingual Learners across grade levels.
2. Deliver bilingual academic support in collaboration with content area teachers.
3. Differentiate instruction based on students’ English language proficiency levels and academic needs.
4. Use data to monitor student progress in both English language acquisition and academic achievement.
5. Maintain accurate documentation for student performance and program compliance.
6. Communicate effectively with families, providing outreach in Spanish when appropriate.
7. Cultivate a welcoming, inclusive, and linguistically rich learning environment.
8. Participate in school-based teams and collaborate with educators to support student success.
9. Engage in ongoing professional learning focused on English language development, bilingual education, and culturally responsive practices.
10. Assist students in navigating cultural adjustments and academic expectations in a new school setting.
11. Utilize formative and summative assessments to guide instruction and measure language growth.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
12. In-depth understanding of second language acquisition, ELD standards, and bilingual education strategies.
13. Proven ability to establish strong relationships with multilingual learners and their families.
14. Effective communication and collaboration skills with colleagues, students, and administrators.
15. Commitment to equity, culturally responsive pedagogy, and inclusive instructional practices.
16. Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
17. Familiarity with English Language Proficiency assessments (e.g., LAS Links, WIDA) preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS
18. Valid Connecticut State Department of Education certification in one of the following areas:ELL/English to Speakers of Other Languages (111) Bilingual Education (009)
19. Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field required; Master’s Degree preferred.
20. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English strongly preferred.
21. Experience working in diverse, multicultural, and multilingual educational settings desirable.
SALARY:
Salary is determined according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement between NEA Danbury and the Danbury Board of Education, available on the district website.
