Clinical Lead Respiratory Physiotherapist – Critical Care & Surgery

Hull University Teaching Hospitals are seeking a Band 7 Clinical Lead Physiotherapist to join our diverse team of allied health professionals. The post holder will provide clinical leadership within the Critical Care & Surgery team at Castle Hill, predominantly focusing on Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiology while sharing responsibility for the entire section, including ICU and general surgery. Flexibility in work area is essential.
The role involves coordinating the on‑call rota, maintaining respiratory skill across the department, and working alongside the MDT to plan, deliver and evaluate the therapy service for patients referred to the service. As a Clinical Lead Physiotherapist you will bring advanced expertise in assessment and treatment of respiratory conditions, be responsible for professional and organisational development of the therapy service, uphold high standards of patient‑centred care, and lead projects and audits to keep the service evidence‑based and effective.
Main duties of the job
* Lead, plan and coordinate the delivery of physiotherapy within Critical Care and Surgical caseloads, promoting active recovery and supporting patient flow after routine and complex surgery.
* Coordinate the on‑call rota at Castle Hill, including production, management, emergency cover (unsocial hours) and ensuring staff competence for on‑call duties.
* Educate and upskill respiratory staff, and maintain evidence‑based practice through projects, audits and protocol updates.
* Develop relationships with the MDT, consultant surgeons, anaesthetists, ACPs, ward sisters and nursing teams to promote effective post‑operative care; attend MDT and governance meetings as required.
Qualifications
* Degree in physiotherapy or equivalent
* HCPC registration
* Post‑graduate qualification/experience in leadership
* Evidence of post‑graduate training/qualification in a relevant area
Experience
* More than 1 year experience as Senior Physiotherapist in the UK
* Experience in acute respiratory, ICU and respiratory on‑call settings
* Clinical experience in various settings and MDT working
* Experience delivering IST (Integrative Science Therapy)
Knowledge, Training & Skills
* Ability to prioritise clinical and non‑clinical tasks
* Ability to performance manage
* Understanding of QI and audit processes
* Experience of rota management and service improvement
* Knowledge of HR processes
Other Requirements
* Commitment to CPD
* Member of the ACPRC or other relevant clinical interest group
