Offer description

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Bioinformatician to lead and develop cutting-edge research into genome regulation and identification of novel therapeutic targets for rare disease.

You will join the Computational Rare Disease Genomics (CRDG) Team, which is led by Associate Professor Nicky Whiffin and based within the University of Oxford’s Big Data Institute. The CRDG team collectively use computational genomics to understand mechanisms underlying rare human disease with a goal to enhance both diagnosis and treatment. We have a highly collaborative, open-science approach. As part of CRDG, you will lead analysis of large-scale ‘omics datasets, including genomic sequencing, RNA-sequencing, and ribosome profiling data, playing a role in setting the project direction. You will work in a highly collaborative research environment, for example, interfacing with the new MRC centre of research excellence in Therapeutic Genomics. You will benefit from our strong commitment within CRDG to both personal and professional development: you will be encouraged to develop your own ideas, play a role in writing and developing grant proposals, present your work at scientific meetings and conferences, and build your research profile and network.

You will be fascinated and excited by the power of genomics to inform rare disease diagnosis and the promise of genome-targeted therapies for the treatment of rare disease, you will be responsible for leading detailed analysis of large genomic datasets, including data processing statistical analyses, interpretation and presentation. You will have a key role in developing novel analytical and statistical approaches and in setting the direction of the research project, with novel research ideas.

It is essential that you currently hold a PhD in a related field (e.g. genomics, statistics or bioinformatics) and have additional postdoctoral research experience (either within academia, industry, or other research settings). You will have demonstrable experience in leading research in genetics, biostatistics and/or bioinformatics, including a strong record of publications and presentations. Similarly, proficiency in the use of programming languages, for example R or Python, is required. You will have excellent communication skills, including documented ability to write for publications, create figures reflecting data analyses, and present research to both internal and external stakeholders.

Applications for this vacancy should be made online, and you will need to upload a supporting statement and CV. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience. Please restrict your documentation to your CV and supporting statement only. Any other documents will be requested at a later date.

This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 36 months and is funded by Wellcome.

Only applications received before 12 midday on 28 August 2025 will be considered. Please quote 180359 on all correspondence.

Informal enquiries are welcomed and can be addressed to Nicky Whiffin at nicola.whiffin@well.ox.ac.uk.
