We are working closely alongside a Local Authority in North Northamptonshire to assist with the appointment of a Billing and Recovery Officer on a 1-month contract likely to be extended at client’s discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.
Rate of Pay: 18.23 - 23.20 per hour
Summary
The Billing and Recovery Officer will be responsible for administering Council Tax billing and recovery processes in line with legislation council policies and case law. The role involves initiating and progressing recovery actions, managing customer queries, liaising with enforcement agents and representing the authority in court when required. The postholder must balance efficiency in debt recovery with fairness, tact and excellent customer service, ensuring compliance with corporate debt recovery strategies.
Responsibilities
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Council Tax legislation, recovery processes, and related case law.
* Administer Council Tax recovery including issuing final notices, summonses, attachment of earnings, and liability orders.
* Refer cases to enforcement agents and manage returned cases, making informed decisions on next steps.
* Deal with customer enquiries by phone, letter and email, negotiating realistic payment arrangements and ensuring excellent customer service.
* Represent the Council in court for Council Tax liability hearings as required.
Experience & Technical Knowledge
* Experience of administering and recovering Council Tax accounts.
* Demonstrable experience of using Academy (Council Tax system).
* Previous experience of preparing and presenting cases in a court environment (desirable).
* Understanding of corporate debt recovery principles and practices.

* This role requires a Basic DBS.
