Job overview

To strategically lead, develop and implement a high quality clinical pharmacy service as part of the multidisciplinary teams in the Medicine division

To lead on developing a strategic vision and roadmap for pharmacy services within the division, taking into account the diverse skills of the wider pharmacy team

To work with the multidisciplinary team to promote safe, effective use of drugs in the specialist clinical area, evaluating available information and providing guidance to the relevant directorate/division on new drugs

To provide an advanced clinical service to patients as part of the team. This may include patient facing work in areas such as: Emergency and Acute Medicine, Medical Specialities, Care of Older People and Frailty

To lead and manage the pharmacy clinical team working in the Medicine division and ensure service delivery to agreed standards in line with business planning requirements.

To ensure the development and delivery of training in the specialist clinical area for pharmacy staff and other staff groups as required.

To support audit and research within teams and promote the use of Quality Improvement (QI) methodology at all opportunities


Main duties of the job

* Work within agreed Trust and departmental policies and procedures and to accepted standards of practice.
* Work in other areas and on other sites in the Trust to cover for service needs.
* Undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time, as are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade.
* Ensure confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity.
* Comply with the Code of Ethics of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
* Treat patients and customers with dignity and courtesy.
* Ensure that medicines do not fall into unauthorised hands.
* Have responsibility for the health, safety and welfare for self and others and to comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety regulations, including COSHH.
* Promote Equal Opportunities and to comply with the requirements of the legislation and the Trust’s policies.
* Attend such training courses and meetings as are necessary for the efficient performance of the post holder’s duties.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Strategically lead, develop and implement a high quality clinical pharmacy service as part of the multidisciplinary teams within planned care
* Work closely with the division Clinical Director and Director of Operations to align clinical pharmacy services with wider Trust patient and business needs
* Act as the interface between Clinical Service Managers within the division and Pharmacy teams
* Act as a leader, expert clinical practitioner and role model within pharmacy for the specialist clinical area.
* Providing support and advice to other health care professionals through participation in relevant professional groups and appropriate working groups, attendance at conferences and educational events and practice development.
* Demonstrate an advanced level of professional reasoning, judgement and accountability and manage difficult and ambiguous problems, making decisions in situations where there is limited information.
* Demonstrate expert practice in the planning and delivery of pharmaceutical care for patients in the specialist clinical area across the Trust. This will involve managing patients with complex or specialist requirements for pharmaceutical care.


Person specification

* Post qualification hospital experience. Experience in supervision of staff. Computer literate for dispensing and stock keeping purposes. Staff training. Patient/carer counselling. Multidisciplinary team work.
* Good interpersonal skills, Good communication skills – verbal and written. Ability to meet objectives and targets. Ability to motivate self and others. Ability to organise own workload and that of others. Good time management. Ability to work under pressure and prioritise work. Problem solving skills. Ability to work accurately with attention to detail. Competent in all areas of dispensing practice. Ability to identify and solve problems. Proven organisational skills, self and others. Customer Care Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Accurate numeracy skills.
* Experience with the CMM pharmacy computer system. Knowledge and experience of appraisal. Knowledge of NVQ process. Dispensing/supply of clinical trials and GCP. Understanding of and participation in data collection for KPIs and audit.
* Ability to lead a team. Demonstrates initiative. Good IT skills. Assertiveness skills. Ability to manage change.
* Experience of managing complex projects.
* Significant post registration hospital pharmacy experience at a senior level.
