About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Engineer to support nuclear projects based in Whitehaven. This hybrid contract role will focus on ensuring the highest standards of health, safety, and regulatory compliance across project activities within a highly regulated nuclear environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide health and safety support across nuclear project operations
Ensure compliance with all relevant UK health & safety legislation and nuclear industry regulations
Develop and review risk assessments, method statements (RAMS), and safety documentation
Conduct site inspections, audits, and safety assurance activities
Identify hazards and implement effective mitigation and control measures
Support incident investigations and root cause analysis
Promote a strong safety culture across all project teams and contractors
Liaise with internal stakeholders, contractors, and regulatory bodies
Monitor and report on HSE performance, KPIs, and improvement plans
Support continuous improvement initiatives and best practice implementation
Requirements
Proven experience in a Health & Safety role within the nuclear sector
Strong knowledge of UK HSE legislation and compliance requirements
Experience working in highly regulated environments (e.g., nuclear, oil & gas, or major infrastructure)
NEBOSH General Certificate (minimum) or equivalent qualification
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams
Desirable Skills & Experience
Experience working on projects at Sellafield or similar licensed nuclear sites
NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 6 qualification
Membership of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) or working towards Chartered status
Familiarity with safety case requirements and nuclear-specific regulations
Experience with contractor management and CDM Regulations
