As a veterinary pathologist you will be responsible for the preparation, examination, and interpretation of tissue samples to support accurate diagnosis, research outcomes, and animal health monitoring. The role provides expert guidance on tissue sampling, fixation, processing, staining, and microscopic evaluation to ensure high quality, reproducible results. You will contribute to scientific integrity, supports welfare driven decision making, and ensures compliance with relevant laboratory, regulatory, and ethical standards.
What you’ll be doing:
* Conduct detailed microscopic evaluation of tissues and record findings accurately and consistently.
* Diagnose pathological changes, identify infectious, inflammatory, neoplastic, and degenerative conditions, and report them clearly to stakeholders.
* Report Animal Health Monitoring results accurately and on time to Fera stakeholders using LIMS (Nautilus)
* Support and advise stakeholders on animal health monitoring programmes including interpretation of results relevant to colony health, biosecurity, or facility operations.
* Develop operating procedures (SOPs) for histological workflows.
* Collaborate with veterinarians, facility managers, and researchers to provide integrated pathology insights.
* Participate in case discussions, data review meetings, and project planning where animal health monitoring expertise is required.
* Maintain compliance with FELASA guidance, internal quality systems, and regulatory frameworks.
* Contribute to continuous improvement by monitoring new technologies, techniques, and diagnostic methods.
* Provide training and mentorship to laboratory technicians or junior staff in histological techniques and pathology interpretation.
* Provide training and mentorship to external stakeholders as required
* Be active in the field of Laboratory Animal Science Participate in conferences and symposia, meetings as required.
* Produce thought leadership documents, publications.
What we’re looking for:
* Strong understanding of tissue biology, pathology principles, and histology techniques.
* Expertise in interpreting microscopic lesions across multiple organ systems.
* High attention to detail and strong analytical and documentation skills.
* Ability to communicate findings clearly to technical and non technical audiences.
* Knowledge of laboratory animal pathology and health monitoring.
In addition to the above, we are also looking for the following qualifications:
* MRCVS
* Postgraduate training in Histopathology
* FRCpath
* Board certified experimental Pathologist
