Stunning landscapes, a supportive workplace, and a chance to make a difference in children’s lives you’ll discover this as a PICU Nurse at Starship Child Health – New Zealand’s National Children’s Hospital, the only children’s intensive care hospital in the South Pacific. Starship is part of Te Toka Tumai Auckland district of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, which manages New Zealand’s publicly-funded healthcare system.
WELCOME TO A DIFFERENT WORLD
Often ranked as one of the best places to live and work, New Zealand features breath-taking scenery and friendly locals. Starship, located in the largest city, Auckland, is surrounded by a bustling metropolitan, while still being close to beautiful beaches and countryside.
ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES
“At Starship, the opportunities for growth are impressive,” says Margaret Dotchin, ChiefNursing Offi cer, Te Toka Tumai Auckland. Margaret leads one of the largest nursing workforces in the country. “Whether aiming for senior roles, becoming a nurse specialist, or a clinical coach, there’s a clear career path for those who are keen to grow their career.”
New Zealand nurses have also recently received an historic gender pay equity pay rise. Molly Noble, Starship PICU Nurse confirms: “When I moved to Auckland from the UK, my starting salary was one and a half times what I was earning in London!”
A NURTURING, & INNOVATIVE CULTURE
Joining the team at Starship means you’re part of a family where everyone is heard, and valued. Molly explains, “The people that I have met at work since living here have become my surrogate family.” She adds, “Our managers are supportive of us prioritising our wellbeing and family life through regular time out from work. For example, after the pandemic, I was able to go home for two months.” There’s also a strong emphasis on innovation, with nurses at the forefront of driving positive change. You’ll feed off the energy and knowledge of your colleagues, and be empowered to succeed.
A UNIQUE WORKPLACE
At Starship, the multidisciplinary team supports each other and works together. You’ll enjoy autonomy in your role, with opportunities to set care plans and make a real impact on patient outcomes.
Molly describes what that looks like as a member of the dedicated Starship PICU retrieval team. “We fly critically ill children from across New Zealand and the Pacific Islands to Starship. It’s been a privilege to learn what it means to be a retrieval nurse and adapt my practice to care for these children and their families during a stressful time. Recognising the impact we have, and the difference we make, isone of the best things about my job here.”
AN ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME
Enjoy a meaningful, challenging career and a remarkable lifestyle at Starship. And, with 4-8 weeks of orientation on arrival, you’ll be well-prepared to hit the ground running.
