The role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Biochemistry Department within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde as a Medical Laboratory Assistant, supporting one of the largest and busiest laboratory services in the UK. This role is central to ensuring patient safety through the accurate receipt and preparation of samples for analysis. Working within NHSGGC offers excellent training, stability and the chance to contribute to vital diagnostic services that support patient care every day. You will become part of a skilled, supportive multidisciplinary team operating within a 24/7 service. This is an ideal role for someone with strong attention to detail who values teamwork and precision in a healthcare environment.

Band 2 roles are not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa routes. All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.


Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

* Glasgow Royal Infirmary
* Day shift, back shift, weekend morning working
* Fixed‑term for 12 months
* Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part‑time hours


Key responsibilities:

* Accurately receive, identify and prepare patient samples in line with strict laboratory procedures
* Centrifuge, separate aliquot and dilute specimens ready for analysis
* Operate laboratory equipment including centrifuges, pipettes and the pneumatic tube system
* Maintain high standards of cleanliness, infection control and health and safety compliance
* Record sample data and maintain accurate documentation using laboratory IT systems
* Respond to telephone enquiries in a professional and courteous manner
* Participate in rota working including evenings and weekend shifts as required


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

* Three Highers at grade C or above including Chemistry or Biology plus Maths or equivalent qualification
* SVQ Level 3 life sciences modern apprenticeship or equivalent accredited learning
* Evidence of good numeracy literacy and accurate data handling skills
* Basic IT skills with ability to learn laboratory computer systems
* Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately in a high volume environment
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team under supervision and agreed protocols
* Good communication skills including a confident and polite telephone manner
