Job Summary

We are seeking three dedicated Locum Consultants (12 month fixed term contract) to join our busy Ophthalmic Accident & Emergency Department, which provides 24/7 emergency eye care and manages over 100,000 patient episodes annually.

There are 3 roles available on different job plans: 2× 4.91PA roles, and 1× 3.91PA role. All roles will involve weekend and evening working. Please see the job plans at the bottom of the attached job description for further information.

Applicants are required to hold FRCOPhth or equivalent and be registered with the General Medical Council.


Main Duties of the role include:

* Delivery of direct clinical care within the A&E department, including the treatment of urgent cases and management of clinically complex or sight‑threatening conditions. This will include supporting with triage, assessment, and the Urgent Care Clinic where appropriate.
* On the day leadership and management of the busy A&E department, including supervising junior medical staff, nurse practitioners and students, and supporting with operational management decisions to ensure the smooth running of the department and delivery against operational targets.
* Contribution to continuous service development and improvement, engagement in audits and supporting robust clinical governance.
* Providing appropriate training and teaching to staff, supporting their professional development.
* Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to provide specialist advice to primary care and other services.
* Engage in research into clinical ophthalmology to stay up to date with current research and drive continuous innovation.
* Maintain continuous professional development in line with Royal College of Ophthalmologist requirements.

Person Specification – Education & Qualifications (Essential)

* FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification.
* Full GMC Registration (with a ‘Licence to Practise’)
* Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of entry
* CCT in Ophthalmology or equivalent ophthalmic training (or be within 6 months of CCT date)


Desirable

* Higher Degree (e.g. MD or PhD).


Further training & knowledge (Essential)

* Completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology.
* Extensive knowledge of General Ophthalmology
* Relevant research methods training with up-to-date GPC
* Extensive knowledge of Ophthalmic Emergencies


Desirable

* Should have received training in educational supervision as defined by the GMC
* Attended clinical leadership training


Skills & ability (Essential)

* Audit & research skills.
* Management & Leadership skills.
* Ability to lead & co‑coordinate clinical & multidisciplinary teams.
* Significant Ophthalmic sub‑specialty experience.


Desirable

* Excellent teaching & presentation skills.


Experience (Essential)

* Teaching experience.
* Demonstrable experience of taking a leading role in a management, teaching or research group.
* Involvement in clinical leadership roles such as participation in QuIPP projects & service improvement projects.


Desirable

* Experience of public & patient engagement.
* Management innovation experience.


Personal qualities (Essential)

* Excellent communication skills.
* Ability to lead & co‑coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
* Good Team Building Skills.
