Consultant Ecologist — WSP in the UK & Ireland
Overview
WSP is expanding its ecological expertise in Cumbria and invites a highly skilled ecologist to shape projects that benefit diverse habitats and contribute to national and regional environmental strategies. The role offers an opportunity to collaborate with passionate professionals, bring fresh ideas, and influence the development of a forward‑thinking, inclusive team.
Responsibilities
* Undertake ecology surveys, including extended Phase 1 habitat/UKHab surveys and protected species surveys.
* Contribute to a range of ecological deliverables such as Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Management Plans, Protected Species Reports, European Protected Species licence applications, Biodiversity Net Gain Assessment and Reporting, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), Biodiversity chapters of EIAs, and Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA).
* Prepare tenders for schemes and suites of habitat, botanical and protected species surveys.
* Client liaison and project management.
* Provide mentoring and training to the local and wider ecology team.
Qualifications
* Academic qualification in Ecology or a related discipline.
* Qualifying Member (or higher) status with CIEEM, or eligibility for this status.
* Experience in extended Phase 1 habitat/UKHab surveys and knowledge in protected species surveys, working towards protected species licences.
* Demonstrable experience in ecological survey, ideally in a consultancy environment; other experience, including voluntary work, will be considered.
* Appreciation of relevant wildlife legislation and ecological survey methodologies.
* Experience in ecological consultancy with a developing core field and reporting skillset.
* A self‑confident, enthusiastic, energetic outlook and motivation to learn.
* Good communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
