The Urology department is part of the Urology and Nephrology directorate and is a well-established department, providing excellent urology services to a wide catchment area. The department houses the tertiary Stone Centre, the award-winning Poplar Unit, and has a dedicated Redwood Ward. Poplar Unit also features its own seminar room with state-of-the-art audio-visual facilities. There are 8 full-time consultant urologists, including one visiting consultant. This is a full-time replacement post to cover a consultant urologist. The appointee is expected to cover core urology, with a preference for those with a special interest in robotic urology surgery. The department includes 8 middle-grade doctors, two of whom are specialist registrars on the Kent Surrey and Sussex (KSS) deanery rotation, and two research/clinical fellows pursuing higher degrees. Additionally, there are two core trainees, a trust urology SHO, and four foundation doctors. The department is well-supported by specialist nurses, cancer and stone coordinators, and maintains close engagement with Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) to develop translational research.
Main duties of the job
The appointed consultant will perform core urology procedures, with a preferable interest in robotic urological surgery. This full-time replacement post involves joining a team of 8 existing consultants (including one visiting) in a friendly and progressive environment. The role is to complement the existing team and provide specialist care to urology patients.
The candidate will work at both Darent Valley Hospital (DVH) and Queen Mary Hospital (QMH). Outpatient activities, day care, and main theatre work are conducted at both sites. In QMH, there are facilities for high-risk surgeries and overnight stays, supported by a newly developed Enhanced Care Unit. Resident Medical Officers provide 24/7 support, including weekends, with established patient transfer mechanisms to DVH if necessary. Cancer urology surgeries are performed at Medway Hospital.
The appointee will have access to secretarial support, office facilities, and the Trust's mentoring scheme. All consultants are expected to participate in clinical governance, including clinical audits and annual appraisals.
