This 12-month placement offers a starting salary of £24,500 and the chance to work on site at our Heysham 2 Power Station. You’ll launch your career in Emergency Preparedness with our customised training programme, take on a meaningful role, gain hands-on experience, learn from experts, and contribute to the department’s improvements.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll support the planning and delivery of emergency exercises and training events. You will
* Produce communications material to support the administration of the Emergency Scheme
* Attend internal and external emergency planning forums, including meetings with local authorities and emergency services
* Support improvement projects relating to emergency facilities and equipment
You will work across a broad range of Emergency Preparedness areas, gain experience of team working, problem solving, using human performance tools, and take part in Emergency Preparedness and Station-related training. You will also have opportunities to work on plant operations and explore other areas of interest.
What You’ll Be Learning
During your placement, you’ll gain in-depth experience within the department at a nuclear power plant. Past students have worked on safety campaigns, developed analytical methods to optimise performance, and helped to develop Emergency exercise scenarios.
You’ll learn about systems vital to Emergency Preparedness, including safety protocols, technical governance, quality assurance, analysis, communication strategies and IT systems. You’ll also collaborate with other departments to understand how a nuclear power station operates.
Your Work Location
You will be based at Heysham 2 Nuclear Power Station in Lancashire and will have the opportunity to work cross-functionally with other departments to gain a comprehensive view of how a nuclear power station is run.
Who You Are
To be eligible, you should be on track to achieve, or have already achieved, a 2:2 undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Business, Engineering or Science. You should have strong technical and analytical skills, a genuine desire to learn, and effective communication and teamwork abilities. An interest in working in a highly regulated, safety-conscious industry with some basic knowledge of nuclear reactor design, operations and safety is desirable.

Security Vetting
To be appointed, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which ordinarily requires you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years.
