Research Associate / Research Fellow (ED13574)

University of Bath
Bath, Somerset, United Kingdom

The University of Bath is inviting applications for a Research Associate or Research Fellow to contribute to an innovative, large‑scale research project focused on epigenetics, genetics, and neuroimaging in relation to brain health and ageing. This role is part of a prestigious ERC/UKRI‑funded five‑year project led by Dr Esther Walton, which aims to understand how the epigenome and brain age across the human lifespan, and how these processes relate to lifelong mental health outcomes.

The successful candidate will play a central role in designing and conducting high‑quality research, analysing complex datasets, and contributing to the development of new research insights. The project adopts a novel life‑course approach, examining ageing from birth to later life, combining expertise in epigenetics, genetics, and neuroimaging. Responsibilities include leading or supporting research activities, contributing to publications, disseminating findings to inform teaching, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. Research Fellows will be expected to take a more independent leadership role, including developing research objectives, overseeing analysis, and mentoring team members.

The position is offered on a full‑time (36.5 hours per week), fixed‑term basis. The University provides a supportive research environment aligned with the Concordat for the Career Development of Researchers, including a minimum of 10 days of professional development annually (pro rata). Staff benefit from a comprehensive package including generous annual leave, pension schemes, wellbeing support, professional development opportunities, staff discounts, visa support, and family‑friendly policies.

Eligibility Criteria

* A PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience, Genetics, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional experience. Candidates applying for the Research Fellow level should demonstrate significant postdoctoral experience and an established track record of independent research.

Required Expertise/Skills

* Experience in epigenetic and/or genetic data analysis (e.g., polygenic risk scores, EWAS) and/or neuroimaging techniques (e.g., Freesurfer, MATLAB)
* Strong programming and analytical skills, including proficiency in R, Python, or MATLAB
* Advanced statistical analysis capabilities
* Experience conducting research in genetics, epigenetics, neuroscience, or related psychological fields
* Ability to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams
* Excellent communication, organisational, and time‑management skills
* For Research Fellow applicants: demonstrated ability to lead research projects, publish independently, and mentor junior researchers

Salary Details

£38,784 to £46,049 per annum (Grade 7 for Research Associate; higher grade possible for Research Fellow depending on experience)
