Overview The Principal Workday Architect will play a pivotal role in designing and governing the technical architecture of our Workday platform, reporting directly to the Manager of Workday Architects. This senior-level position focuses on delivering scalable, secure, and innovative Workday solutions that support business objectives and adhere to best practice process enablement and system design principles. The Principal Architect will collaborate closely with HR, IT, Finance, and business stakeholders to ensure the Workday ecosystem remains robust, compliant, and future-ready.
Key Responsibilities Lead the design, configuration, and maintenance of core and advanced compensation modules, ensuring alignment with global business objectives and compliance standards
Own end-to-end compensation-related system configuration such as compensation plans, including merit, bonus, and stock plans
Serve as the subject matter expert for compensation architecture, advising senior leadership on complex compensation matters, market benchmarking, and salary structure design
Oversee global compensation cycles, including performance review integration, promotion cycles, and incentive plan administration, ensuring consistency and equity across regions
Lead the end-to-end architectural design and technical oversight of Workday modules, with a focus on Core HCM, Advanced Compensation, Recruiting, Learning, Benefits, and Absence
Develop and maintain architectural standards, frameworks, and patterns to ensure consistency, scalability, and alignment with enterprise goals
Evaluate and recommend enhancements to Workday configurations, integrations, and extensions, ensuring best practice system design and process enablement
Serve as a subject matter expert on Workday Studio, EIBs, calculated fields, security configuration, and business process design
Partner with HR, IT, Finance, and business units to translate complex business requirements into scalable Workday solutions
Participate in the Workday Design Authority or Governance Board, contributing to design reviews and architectural integrity assessments
Guide teams through technical planning for Workday releases, ensuring new features are leveraged optimally and securely
Support change management, training, and adoption initiatives related to system design changes
Act as the final escalation point for complex architectural issues, troubleshooting and resolving design challenges in alignment with best practices
Oversee integration design and implementation, including Workday Extend, APIs, and third-party system connections (e.g., payroll, identity management)
Ensure platform security, compliance, and audit readiness across all Workday modules
Participate in and support Architecture Review Forums, Workday Release Impact Reviews, Innovation Workshops, and Security Summits
Proactively identify opportunities for process improvement, automation, and innovation within the Workday ecosystem
Stay current with Workday updates, industry trends, and emerging HR technologies, recommending adoption where appropriate
Qualifications Required
7+ years of hands-on Workday experience, including architectural or solution design roles
Deep functional and technical knowledge of multiple Workday modules, especially Core HCM and Compensation
Strong understanding of integration methods, Workday Extend, calculated fields, and security best practices
Proven ability to translate business requirements into scalable, maintainable, and secure Workday solutions
Excellent communication, documentation, and stakeholder management skills
Preferred
Experience in a large, multi-national organization with complex HR requirements
Workday certifications across multiple domains
Exposure to Agile or hybrid delivery frameworks
Familiarity with other HR technologies and APIs (e.g., ServiceNow, SAP, Microsoft Entra/Active Directory)
