Description £31,298 to £33,472 per annum the band minimum is the normal starting pay for those new to a role. In exceptional circumstances, when relevant skills and experience can be identified, a higher starting salary may be considered. We will give full consideration to requests for flexible and part time working, such as reduced hours, compressed hours or job sharing. British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Data Assistant to join our Polar Data Centre (PDC) team. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. You'll be joining our interdisciplinary team of the UK Polar Data Centre (PDC) that is the focal point for Arctic and Antarctic environmental data management in the UK. Part of the NERC Environmental Data Service and based at BAS, it coordinates the management of polar data from UK-funded research and supports researchers in complying with national and international data legislation and policy. We are a small friendly team comprising specialist data managers, software developers and web developers passionate about Open Data and ensuring that data collected today will be understandable and usable long into the future. You'll help us to improve access to high-value biological data compilations held at the Polar Data Centre, facilitate discoverability of physical samples held at biological sample collections at BAS and to assist in the development of a biological sample collection database. Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop management skills of research-grade data and biological samples, get insight into processes and practices of data harmonisation and integration and to further develop coding skills Current projects the team are working on include contribution into the Environmental Data Service prototype sensor commons, NERC data commons or polar data interoperability through international collaboration in SCAR, SOOS or Polar Data Forum. Some of your main responsibilities will include: Collaborating with members of the PDC and science contacts to identify high-value data compilations held at PDC as candidates for integration with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). To become familiar with the Darwin Core Standard, translate the candidate datasets into the Standard, upload the datasets into the PDC instance of the Integrated Publishing Toolkit and to register the datasets at GBIF Please download job description for more details.
