Science Technician

We are extremely pleased that you are considering applying for the post of Science Technician to take up the post as soon as possible.

Lancaster University School of Mathematics (LUSoM) is one of nine Maths Schools in England and part of u- Maths the network linking us all. We are a specialist sixth form college bringing together talented mathematicians and creating a vibrant community where they are actively encouraged to explore the subjects they love.

Main Duties and Responsibilities below:

To be based in the preparation rooms and be available for support of teaching staff throughout the day during lesson time.

To be responsible to the Head of Chemistry for the day-to-day running of the laboratories.

To work within the Health and Safety and Security policies of the Science Department.

To provide appropriate, functional apparatus, chemicals and biological specimens etc for practical work in lessons, outreach activities or open days, as instructed by individual teachers, including ICT equipment such as data-loggers.

To inform teaching staff of any potential problems or risks associated with a practical, and advise on alternative practical methods if appropriate.

To maintain sufficient stocks of practical materials and stationery as required.

To organise, store and check the condition of chemicals and equipment.

To maintain up to date training in the care and handling of radioactive materials.

To ensure that spillages and breakages are dealt with immediately in a safe manner.

To test experimental procedures when requested.

To assist teachers and students during practical lessons when required.

To leave the preparation rooms in such a state that in the event of absence, the normal work of the department can carry on with minimum disruption.

To ensure laboratories are safe at the end of the day and that all apparatus and materials are returned to storage or disposed of safely in accordance with CLEAPPS and COSHH policies and practice.

To maintain Health and Safety Records for equipment and materials and report any incidents or concerns to the Health and Safety Officer and attend the Health and Safety Committee Meetings.

Any other duties as deemed necessary within the scope of the post.

To participate fully and positively in staff development opportunities to improve effectiveness, develop skills and increase/update knowledge.

To follow all School policies and procedures and work in accordance with the School’s Safeguarding and Health & Safety Policies, including carrying out risk assessments when appropriate.

Terms and Conditions

We welcome applications for this post to commence as soon as possible.

Hours: 29.6 hours per week, term time only. Working days will be Monday, Tuesday Thursday and Friday and working times will be agreed upon appointment.

Salary: The post will be paid on the Sixth Form Colleges’ Support Staff Pay Spine at points 8 to 10 pro rata to £25,330 to £26,666 per annum. Actual Salary £17,484.44 to £18,406.64 per annum
