Overview
Health and Safety Officer (H&S) with proven experience in an H&S role and a recognised qualification (e.g., NEBOSH or equivalent) is required to join a well-established multi-academy trust comprising three schools, based in Hedge End, Southampton, Hampshire. Salary: £33,179 - £36,369 per annum (Full-Time); part-time pro-rata from £16,594 per annum. Location: Hedge End, Southampton, Hampshire (SO30). Job type: Permanent, Full-Time or Part-Time. Working hours: Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:00pm (full-time) and 3 days a week, 21 hours, 8:30am – 4:00pm (part-time).
Candidate requirements: Full UK driving license and access to a vehicle for travel between Trust sites.
Responsibilities
* Develop, review, and update health and safety policies, procedures, and guidance in line with current legislation and best practice.
* Communicate policies and procedures effectively to all staff and stakeholders.
* Record, investigate, and report accidents, incidents, and near misses.
* Conduct regular health and safety risk assessments across all sites; maintain a comprehensive risk register; advise on risk mitigation strategies for all Trust activities, including educational visits and extra-curricular activities.
* Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and approved codes of practice; conduct regular audits and inspections; maintain records of training, inspections, and incident reports; liaise with external bodies (e.g., HSE and local authorities) as required.
* Develop and deliver health and safety training programs for staff; promote a strong health and safety culture within the Trust; provide expert advice to school leaders, staff, and the Trust Board.
* Lead investigations of accidents and incidents; ensure timely reporting to authorities (e.g., RIDDOR); monitor trends to identify targeted intervention areas.
* Advise on contractor selection and management; review contractor method statements and risk assessments.
* Assist with development and review of emergency plans for all Trust schools, including fire safety plans and drills.
Essential qualifications and experience
* Recognised health and safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent).
* Proven experience in a health and safety role, preferably within an education or multi-site environment.
* In-depth knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and best practices.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to engage staff at all levels.
* Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
* Proficient in IT (Microsoft Office); ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Full UK driving license and access to a vehicle for travel between Trust sites.
Desirable qualifications
* NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
* Experience of working with schools and understanding of health and safety challenges in education.
* Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., IOSH).
