About Bhuku Ltd

Bhuku Ltd is a trusted specialist in prison education and rehabilitation, delivering high-quality, trauma-informed, and inclusive learning programmes across the UK prison estate. We design innovative, accredited, and non-accredited pathways that promote employability, wellbeing, and positive change — empowering learners to rebuild their confidence, gain qualifications, and prepare for a successful life after custody.

We are now recruiting a passionate, adaptable, and experienced Tutor to lead delivery of three innovative short courses at HMP Portland:

1. Entrepreneurship & Business Skills

2. Tackling Neurodiversity Through Sport

3. CrossFit Academy (Incorporating Accredited First Aid)

This post offers a unique opportunity to inspire and empower neurodiverse learners, build life and employability skills, and contribute to a culture of positive learning and rehabilitation.

⸻

About the Programme

You will deliver Bhuku's Skills Ninjas Programme, a structured and inclusive series of short courses designed for men in custody. Each programme combines classroom teaching, practical workshops, peer mentoring, and accredited first aid training (for relevant modules).

Course A: Entrepreneurship & Business Skills (4 weeks)

* Explore business start-up ideas, planning, marketing, budgeting, and communication.

* Support learners to design their own enterprise proposals.

* Develop transferrable skills in leadership, teamwork, and problem solving.

Course B: Tackling Neurodiversity Through Sport (6 weeks)

* Promote inclusivity, teamwork, and wellbeing through sport-based activities.

* Help learners understand neurodiversity and how sport can improve focus, resilience, and emotional regulation.

* Embed accredited Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) training.

Course C: CrossFit Academy (6 weeks)

* Deliver a practical fitness and wellbeing curriculum.

* Link exercise to mental health, routine, and employability skills.

* Deliver accredited Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) modules.

Each course is followed by a dedicated week for catch-up, marking, admin, and individual learner support, ensuring quality, inclusion, and progression.

⸻

Key Responsibilities

* Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, learner-centred sessions across all three courses.

* Teach a mix of accredited and non-accredited content, including Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW).

* Provide 1:1 support and differentiated instruction for learners with neurodiverse profiles, ESOL needs, and low literacy levels.

* Foster a safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed classroom environment.

* Train and supervise peer mentors to provide in-class support and enhance engagement.

* Develop and adapt resources, lesson plans, and assessment materials.

* Conduct formative and summative assessments, record learner progress, and submit MI reports to prison and Bhuku management.

* Work closely with the Learning & Skills Manager, Neurodiversity Team, and Bhuku's Programme Manager to ensure alignment with prison operations.

* Maintain accurate records, attendance logs, and evidence of learning for quality assurance.

* Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation across the delivery model.

⸻

Essential Requirements

* Recognised Teaching Qualification (L3 or above) (e.g., AET, PTLLS, CertEd, PGCE).

* Experience teaching adults in custody or alternative education settings.

* Strong knowledge of neurodiversity, inclusive practice, and trauma-informed teaching.

* Understanding of employability, business, or sport-based learning.

* Confident in delivering accredited training (e.g. First Aid).

* Excellent communication, adaptability, and behaviour management skills.

* Able to use creative, multi-sensory teaching methods to engage reluctant learners.

⸻

Desirable Skills

* First Aid Trainer certification (or willingness to upskill).

* Experience mentoring or coaching peer educators.

* Background in business development, coaching, or fitness instruction.

* Familiarity with accredited awarding bodies (e.g., Pearson, Highfield).

* Knowledge of prison education frameworks and DPS delivery requirements.

⸻

Safeguarding & Vetting

All roles are subject to enhanced vetting and prison clearance. Bhuku Ltd is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of learners and expects all staff to share this commitment.
