Strategic Lead – Building Control and Regulation The Role We have an exceptional opportunity for a senior manager to join our Building Control service to oversee the Councils work under the Building Safety Act and day-to-day Building Control functions. This exciting and challenging role has been created to take the operational lead and have overall management responsibility for the Councils statutory and regulatory Building Control functions including fee earning and non-fee earning operations. You will lead a high performing and award-winning team of staff and work closely with the Councils Planning service; our Housing ALMO - Solihull Community Housing; and project delivery teams. As the Strategic Lead, this will provide you with an excellent opportunity to grow the team’s portfolio of work – building experience and opportunity for continued professional development – something that will be integral in an evolving Building Control arena. This will include links through the BSR and growing our already excellent local portfolio of commercial partners and customers. Why Solihull? In Solihull, we help make big things happen – like the High-Speed Rail network, M42 Junction 5a, our housing growth programme aligned with a new emerging Local Plan and bringing forward exciting commercial and residential developments including Birmingham Airport, the N.E.C., Jaguar Land Rover and Arden Cross developments to name but a few. We also pride ourselves on being a Council that is small enough to care, but big enough to make a difference. To help achieve this we work closely with our public sector partners, businesses, the voluntary sector and communities to improve the lives of the people we serve. Key Requirements To meet the challenge and be successful in the role you will have: A registration at a minimum of Class 2B-F Building Inspector and a registration at Class 4 Technical Manager role. A Degree Qualification in a relevant Built Environment or associated technical discipline and Chartered Membership of a relevant professional body. Detailed knowledge and experience of working within a Local Authority Building Control service, and of leading professional people whilst fostering an environment of continued professional development. Extensive experience of delivering high quality customer service including the ability to establish and develop positive relationships with stakeholders and customers – helping to sustain and generate business. Financial management and contract procurement experience. Ability to support the management of the service area and the development of longer-term strategies. A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle, to enable you to move around sites in the Borough where much of the team’s work is delivered. The Offer In return we offer you the opportunity to develop your experience and expertise, ideas and skills within a friendly, welcoming and dynamic environment, alongside a team of passionate, experienced and skilled professionals. As an employee of Solihull Council, you will also benefit from a competitive salary, attractive staff benefits, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme and a range of flexible working options. This will include benefitting from the implementation of our new Smarter Ways of Working, reflecting that work is what you do and not necessarily where you go to do it. Whilst your office location will be at the Council House you will be able to work from other locations around the borough and from home, as appropriate. Additional information Please submit your CV and a supporting statement that explains how you meet the requirements of the Job Description and Person Specification by following the apply link.
